308 Ammo
I just bought me a cetme today. Wichita has a gun show this weekend I want to get military ammo or something that I can shoot pretty cheep I'd appreciate any information on what is decent and what to stay away from.

If you want ammo just for target and informal shooting, I would try the gun show or one of the sellers in the shotgun news.
J&G sales in Arizona has .308 with brass cases,non corr, at under 120 bucks for a thousand rounds.0 -
I have been using the South African 308 in my Springfield @less than 140.00 per 1000.It shoots 1 1/2 min at 100 meters.Some guys dont like it but it works for me. 0 -
The British mil-surp 7.62NATO (Radway Green head stamped RG) works well. It's linked (tracers removed), but it shoots well and is reasonably priced.
Some guys like a mag full of lead, I still prefer one round to the head.0 -
Portugese surplus stuff is very accurate but is not reloadable. I believe this stuff was loaded for the Cetme rifles.
Hirtenberger is always good quality and boxer primed with a 3 point crimp. This stuff was so popular that it is hard to come by. You don't see it often.
Both loadings I believe are 147 to 150 grain FMJ

I've used several of tbe NATO surplus brands in my Norinco with full satisfaction. Radway Green and South African are excellent but not reloadable. There is a South American brand that IS reloadable. None of them run more than $150/M.
Don't believe any of the negative comments you may have heard or read regarding the Chinese M14's.

I emerged from the gun show today with 500 rounds of 308 ammo. I got 100 rounds of South American, 100 rounds of south African, 100 rounds of Dutch (dealer "claimed" it was good) and 200 rounds of Australian. The Australian caught my eye because it was in a ammo can with bandaleers and stripper clips. Easier than loading manual. I got the numbers from everyone and which ever one seems to shoot well, I will stock up on. All the ammo was about $40 for 200 with the south American coming to $35 for 200. Thanks to all for there help as there were at least 12 different manufacturers to chose from and this brought it down to 4. I didn't get any of the British ammo because he didn't have any broken packages. Now the only thing left is to get some GI mags as I only have one ten rounder at this time. Thanks, Again. [8D] 0 -
Wolfe is bring out some loads in the .308, check with a dealer in this brand. The pistol ammo seems to work fine for plinking.

Buy as much of the South Africa as you can afford.
Put it in the basement.

If you can afford it I recommend federal gold medal 168gr. But if you can't then Black Hills makes some. My springfield seems to prefer 168gr over the 150 or 155's. I handload though. Have had alot of luck using hornady AMAX 168gr bullets. I don't know if anyone makes factory loads using them though. 0 -
Hirteberger is really good stuff and the brass is reloadable. It has a light 3 point crimp on the primer so there is no need to swag the primer pockets before seating a new primer. This stuff is drying up fast too, I haven't seen it advertised for quite a while.
