shot with blanks??
I was told that a friend of a friend was shot and severely wounded by blanks. A small framed female was shot in the chest,head,and face with 5 32 acp blanks then was finaly killed by 2 regular rounds to the head. I didnt think that blanks would penitrate or cause a major injury maby just bruise even at . blank or less than 5 ft.what do you think.

A blank at close range can be quite harmful or even deadly. About 20 years ago there was some trendy young Hollywood actor, the type that would have appealed only to fans under 20 years of age, who placed a revolver loaded with stage blanks to his head during a break in filming and pulled the trigger. The result was that the blank cartridge took a small piece of his skull and sent just like a bullet into his brain killing him. No Acadamy Award for this guy ever! At the very least the card board wadding used in many blanks can cause a nasty infection if lodged below the skin.

John, Yes, blanks are very dangerous within about 15 ft.
As mentioned by Mark, above, blanks are misunderstood by many. The wadding that holds the powder in the case is blasted out the barrel at very high speed.

Blanks are like fireworks, a lot of noise but dangerous if too close. You wouldn't want to let off a cherry bomb in your hand. I can't recall who said it altho true: "Nice from far but far from nice!" 0 -
Yup, make no mistake about blanks.
Eventhough there's no type of shot or projectile in the blanks - there's still a little bit of wax, a wad or little brick of paper/plastic to let the pressure buildup in the cartridge before it rips open and discharges the pressure, giving the noise.
I read about a German bankrobber, that was charged with murder and robbery - but was convicted of involuntary manslaughter and robbery.
The robber had deliberately brought a pistol using blanks, you know, those that only shoots blanks - just a replica.
Well, he accidently held it too close when it fired and made a hole in the skin, cracked the skull and the victim died of complications thereof.
It was later found out, during the trial, that even a pistol shooting nothing but blanks, designed to shoot nothing but blanks - will still crack open or destroy bodyparts if fired too close.
There's an immence pressure, just like in a regular gun - but this pressure, doesn't drive anything else than a little lump of wax or paper/plastic-wad - which is in itself not too dangerous.. at a safe distance.
I read about a Nato military excersize as well.
Some gung-ho (beeeeeeeeeep) held a "prisoner" at gunpoint, with his rifle (loaded with blanks offcourse), with the muzzle resting against the back of the "prisoners" head. And a round went off.
This pressure from the more powerfull rifle-blanks, cause the skin on the skull to lift off the skull. It was about the size of a hand, if I recall correctly.
Luckily nothing more happened, could've gone far worse.

But these things are not to be feared - but to be learned from.
A little thought or interest in what you and your friends uses, keeps you safe - especially if you know how it works and hot to handle it.
Anything that go boom - yes, even magicians fireworks at the scene - is inherently dangerous, if you get too close.

During maneuvers in basic training,where we had to play opposing armies, some half brain put an M-1 with blanks into someone's belly, pulled the trigger and killed him.
This was the first we heard of the danger of blanks as we were not officially warned of their danger.
When my six year old brother found a blank pistol in my pocket early one Sunday morning he tried to cock it with the muzzle in one palm,the butt in the other and the hammer against the refrigerator corner. The gun went off and the homemade 22 blank with tissue paper wadding penetrated his palm. The Dr treated it with Sulfa drugs. The hand swelled up and after a few days expelled(with the help of tweezers)a seemingly endless string of paper.
Needless to say I caught hell for it.0 -
Back in the early '70's, a young Bob Munden put on a 'quick draw' demonstration at our high school. We were all sufficiently impressed. To end this demonstration he took a pop can and shot it in half with one of his blanks. He said that the blank load was only about half of what a store bought one would be, (and, as we all know, 30+ years ago pop cans were made of more substantial material than they are these days). Once again, we were all sufficiently impressed, at least I was.
When I was about 11 or 12, my older brother (who should have known better) shot me in the chest with a 22 blank from about 3 feet away. I had particles imbedded in my chest that I had to dig out with a needle and tweezers, some had to fester and work their way out that way after a few days. As I recall, it burnt like heck! The whole area was red and sore for days. Of course, he swore he'd kill me if I ever told our parents! So.....speaking from 'painfull' experience ....BLANKS ARE NOT TOYS!!!!!!0 -
I believe the actor was Jon Eric Hexum, the show was "Masquerade", and he was using a 44 mag. There was a show that showed a 44 mag blank wad going through a cabbage when shot at the range he shot himself. 0 -

I think it was Bruce Lee himself that got shot during a film, he was supposed to run out of the house - while some "badguy" would shoot him.
But I believe it was mentioned that someone had put real bullets in the gun, instead of blanks - or switched the gun on purpose.
Lee was fatally injured and I believe his son, Brandon Lee took over from there.
I remember the movie, where it was clearly visible that it was Bruce Lee up until the mentioned scene - then they rewrote the story so the mail-character had to have an operation and saying (in the movie) that they had to re-model his face from the accident.
They did the rewrite and used his son instead. As far as I know.
I might be wrong though.

Brue Lee died of an allergic reaction. Not a nice way to go in either case I believe.

This is why I laugh when people say a .22 or .25 or such isn't dangerous. Uh, duh, if a BLANK can kill at close range, ANY bullet will be far more lethal. Some people are just stupid. That said I'd rather have .40 or above for defense, but a LOT of people have died because of stupidity from blanks or small caliber guns.

It wasn't actually a blank. A previous scene had required a close-up shot of the revolver, with cylinder rotating, showing itself to be loaded. A "dummy round" had a live primer and the primer fired forcing a bullet into the barrel. The next time the revolver was used is was firing blanks; the real bullet was forced out the barrel by the blank.
The Discovery or History Channel (or some documentary on another channel) had a real detailed program about the incident.0
