.17 HMR WHAT TO BUY?
I am very interested in purchasing a .17 HMR bolt action rifle. I just found out about this mean looking round. I'm looking for accuracy... I want something that can knock a flea off of a bull's testicle at 100 yards or more. Anyone got any ideas? Who makes the best in your opinion and why? Please state if you own the weapon that you speak of. Thanks! - Toe [8D]

Why not check out the .17 Remington??? They did a limited release of 500 this year and it's an awesome caliber. Either way, I would go with a Reminton rifle with a heavy barrel...synthetic free floated stock. The laminate stocks are not floated or glass bedded. Just my .02...and that ain't much.[:D]

Dont forget the Savage route, i paid $180 for mine and it will absolutely blow your mind. MOA groups using a Ford side mirror for a rest and 10-15mph winds at 100-130yds is "easy"{not really but it sure seems easy} The Savage is incredible. Marlin,Ruger and some other name i can't pronounce also make fine rifles in this caliber, they each are better looking than the Savage, cost more, but not any more accurate IMHO. Good luck. 0 -
I SHOOT A "CZ' AND A RUGER HEAVY BARREL STAINLESS. CZ HAS A BETTER TRIGGER BUT WITH A LITTLE WORK THE RUGER DOES THE BEST JOB.
I WOULD RATHER BE DUCK HUNTING.0 -
In our store,we have sold more Marlins than anything else and we've had nothing but great reports from them all as far as accuracy is concerned.Bob 0 -
We have sold the Savage ones and that is what I shoot as well. I have the bull barrel combo package. It came with a Simmons scope and I am very pleased with the gun. Dealer cost was 170+ for complete package. If I had it to do over I would have gotten the stainless though. Little more money but worth it.
God protect me from my friends, I can take care of my enemies...0 -

steeltoe! You made a good choice! I have shot all of them except the CZ and Anshutz! I tested the Marlin VS, Marlin V, Savage 93/17(just like yours) and the 597. All of them shot!! The velocities generated by all are in the 2700fps range...more than the 2550 advertised velocities. As someone who has been around a lot of accurate rifles, working on them, building them(BR) I have never been more amazed at anything in the gun world! My Marlin VS has consistently and on many occasions due to someone's "I don't beleive it" statements prints under 1" at 200 yards!!!! Find me a rimfire that will do this! When testing the Savage, the 11-15th shots down the tube printed .606@ 100 yards! I also have a Savage Striker with a 10 inch barrel that will do around 1" at 100 yards! All in all more fun than eatin beans!!! And sometimes it's jst nice not to have to chase brass!!
To make sure you get as much enjoyment as possible out of the Savage, put quality glass on it! Preferably something with target style click adjustments! Burris makes their Fullfield 2 3x9 with Balistic Plex that will be right for 100,150,200 yards! Good luck with the new toy!! GHD0
