Mauser 98

I have seen quite a few rifles on gunbroker for sale that are Mauser 98 actions and are reasonably priced. Are they reasonably good actions or what's the scoop on them?

  Since Numrich is not selling recievers any more, does anyone know a good place to get stripped Mauser 98 recievers? I don't want YUGO's.

  I suggest that you take it to your local gunsmith. I'm sure that he could tell you what caliber it is chambered for.
  
  Many surplus 98's were brought back after WWII and converted or rebarreled to the popular calibers of the time.

  Me thinks that if you look closely you will see the Rax is actually Gothic script for Kar. Sound like a sporterized Kar98AZ. Caliber was originally 8mm, but Warcrob gave good advice to take it to a gunsmith. He can verify the caliber. A lot of gunmakers left the 8mm alone as it is a premo caliber in Germany, but a lot didn't for the GI trade.

  Thanks alot I'll see what I can find out. I thought the Rax was a little fancy but didn't realize the whole gothic thing! Thanks

  I don't mean to sound unappreciative but the letters on the gun are RAX, and I don't understand how that crosses over to KAR. Any other thoughts? Thanks

  Are they located on the left side of the receiver or someplace else? Look for small proofs with a crown and Fraktur letters. Is the bottom of the bolt knob flattened?

  Yes they are on the left side, and the bottom of the bolt knob os not flattened.
