Brown Bess / 1763 Charleville Musket Question

Other than where they were originally made & caliber - are there any differences between the original models of these two muskets?

  It would take weeks to type a complete reply to your question, even if I knew it all!! The Brown Bess was made from the 1720s as a flintlock until well into the 1800s in many variations and three basic barrel lengths 46", 42" and 39", the shorter the latest. Earliest models show attention to ornamentation detail in wood carving and brass fittings, as time wore on they were simplified in details of appearance and focused on utility and economy, all the while high quality of weaponry. British muskets were made by numerous contractors, very much alike, each copying a 'sealed pattern' piece furnished and made by the Gov't in the Tower of London. The French 1763 Charleville was a one year model, one of many the French made during the period of use of the Brown Bess. Made for several years with only the variations to be expected before the advent standardization and parts interchangability. French muskets were made primarily in Gov't arsenals and varied in detail more than did their English counterparts. Hope this helps.
