copper fouling.

My 22-250 has copper in the barrel that just won't come out. I've tried "shooters choice" and Hopps fouling solution. I let soak overnight and scrubed again. You can still see copper in the barrel. Any ideas? I'd rather not use ammonia as I've heard this is very rough on a barrel. Is that true?

  daddo, If ammonia is "rough on a barrel" then the BR crowd is in deep doo doo!!!
  Go get yourself some "Sweet's 7.62" and follow directions. "MONTANA EXTREME" has also garnered my attention as of late!!! The ME may just be the "one product fits all" bore cleaner as in my testing it has performed extremely well for cleaning "down to the metal"!!! Again, follow directions!!
  JB bore paste will also get the job done but doesn't need to be used on a regular basis!!! If the bore is old and a lot of shots thru it then maybe a good JB cleaning is called for! However, when you use JB you are essentially "lapping the bore" and removing metal!!! JB is a great product for that rifle that "gets traded in because it won't shoot no more!!!" or the terribly neglected bores but not an everyday cleaning product!! Try what I told you and report back!!! GHD

  This is a foaming copper cleaner that is left in the barrel for a period of time then pushed out with a patch.

  You may want to consider the Outers Electronic cleaning machine. It uses electrolytic processes to remove the copper.

  I use Hoppy copper solvent, Get all the burnt powder out first then run patch of copper out and stand it on it's nose and leave it over night, push the copper out the next morning, takes about 3 nights, but I think it is better that running cleaning rods a couple of houndred times through the Bore. Works fer me.

  SWEETS 7.62!!!!! this stuff eats copper in minutes. The directions will tell you to not let it sit in the barrel more than 10-15min at a time,...this is to keep you from allowing it to dry which is when the damage will occur. Be sure to let it sit 10 minutes,...dry patch and then neutralize with shooters choice or kroil. After that sits for a few minutes,..dry patch and go back with the sweets 7.62. Continue this process until the patch comes out completely clean. Using a NYLON bristle brush with the sweets will speed things up.
  
  nothing cleans like sweets[}:)] but be sure to neutralize the reaction after 15 minutes +/-

  Also when you scrub make sure to use a bronze brush, them nylon ones just don't do the job.
  
  Use some Sweet's 7.62 solvent like everyone said, its some good stuff. Put a patch on an eyelet jag and soak it in sweet's, then mop the barrel with it. Let it sit for an hour and do it again. Your patches will start comming out blue green. When it gets dark, then put a brush on and scrub the heck out of the bore, several strokes all the way through. Then use a push jag and push several thru the bore till they come out clean. Then start over again with the mopping.

  I've tried about every copper fouling cleaner on the market, including those named above.
  
  The WIPEOUT is the best and bore safe product I've used to date. Word of caution though, be careful with your wood stock finishes - it has a tendency to soften them. Use care in application.

  sweets will eat the bronze bristles,...that is the reason for the nylon brush suggestion. You only get one useage out of a bronze brush with sweets. The green you will keep seeing is actully the bronze disolving on the patch and not copper,......been there done that,..couldn't figure out where all that copper kept coming from. Then I realized that the brush went from 30cal down to about a 6mm,......ahhhhhh, an epiphane (sp)[:D]
  
  Lee,...you let sweets sit for an hour in your barrels?[:0] You see any pitting or dulling of the shine in them over time[?] I have often wondered what happens when it is left in the bore for longer than recomended by the directions.
