Percussion Rifles

Im thinking about getting a percussion BP rifle, which brand is good for someone just starting out in BP shooting. I like the ones that look old. Like the replicas. Any advice? Thanks

  Do Your Self a favor...Buy a Decent Kit and build it yourself...Won't cost all that much, and it will give You a Better understanding of Black Powder Guns..and how they operate..You want authentic..Check with TRACK OF THE WOLF. INC....I believe the email address is

  The Thompson Center HAWKEN is a excellent rifle. They make the same basic rifle in either Flint or Percussion.
  Had one in .54 caliber flint, a while back. The first lesson you learn with a flint is NOT to fill the pan to the top with 4F, first time you shoot it.
  As it's a replica of a antique muzzleloader, you can order it direct in many localities, without having to go through a FFL dealer. Save yourself some money that way.

  CVA makes some real nice ones, and also makes ones that are about as cheap as they get ($60 new). I'd try out a cheap one first, see if you like all the cleaning and periodic maintanance before dropping 300-400 on a real nice one. MOST people fall in love with smokepoles once they try it, but it isn't for everyone. If you have any friends that have one give 'em all a try, see what you like in 'em and what you don't and buy one accordingly...

  The good Capt is right. Build it yourself. I did, and in 1960 published my book The Modern Kentucky Rifle. Sold 50k copies and then sold it out to Dixie Gun Works in 1989. They have reprinted it. I have no finiancial interest in this any more, just the voice of experience. Hope this helps. Robert

  This guy sells kits for underhammers (assembled but white metal and unstained wood) with bullets for $250. I have an older underhammer that was my father's and sold the CVA that I built from a kit to the first buyer interested once I got this gun. Even with 2 barels, 50 and 54, I never could get any practical accuracy past 50 yards from the CVA. The underhammer has the benefits of inlines with the ignition going straight into the charge and still looks great. Great price and he will send info on browning the barrels and support after purchase. I'm saving my pennies for a custom UH shotgun to turkey and occasionally pheasant hunt with. These or a T/C if you want a more traitional mountain gun IMHO.
