Remington or weatherby vanguard
I have decided that I want to purchase a new rifle in the .270 win caliber, so the question is do you all like the remington or the weatherby better. I have previously shot both and cannot decide. Suggestions would be great and thanks for the input.

I would definitely go with the remington. As far as out of the box accuracy, you can't hardly beat the 700 series. Weatherby always seemed to have a lot of headspace trying for speed, and thus sacrificing accuracy. Just my opinion, and you know what they say about opinions, they're just like armpits, everyone has them and some of them stink!!!

Weatherby Vangard hands down.
Out of box reports & yesting has a higher percentage of accuracy.
The Vangard barrelled action is what I would describe as a improved Rem 700.
Differences are: Vangard vs Rem
> Gas relief holes in the bolt: Yes (three) vs no (one in receiver)
> Bolt head safety shroud: Yes vs no.
> Positive Sako style extractor: Yes vs no.
> EZ Bolt stop/release: Yes (left side) vs no.
> Bolt lugs: Larger vs smaller.
> EZ & Quiet safety: Yes vs no.
> Receiver cut out for bullet tip: Yes vs no.
These are technical improvements. Some are better for safety, and function, but overall design of the Rem 700 has been proven over the years (except for lawsuits on bolt). Weatherby simply took the 700, made improvements had it built by Howa.
Each are good choices, but for the $$$ the Vangard can't be beat.
.270 Win has no headspace problems, never did.
The general conception, and I use the word 'conception'specifically has been a misinformed, misunderstood design initally fabricated by competitors back in the 50's. Are the things to know AND understand about the Weatherby Mag cartridege design AND purpose,...yes. There in lies the mystery fot those misconceptions.

I think what osprey is referring to is freebore not headspace.

I like the 700 for the reason that aftermarket parts and gunsmithing is more available. The 700 is time proven on the benchrest circuit,...but Howa machines make quality rifles. I would be interested in testing the vanguard if I were to pick one up for a bargain,...but all I have right now are 700 remingtons and 1 weatherby MK V.
I like the weatherby calibers,...but I prefer having my gunsmith chamber a good barrel without the freebore. Just my preference,...but I handload also,..so overpressure from hot factory loads are not an issue.
why chase the game when the bullet can get em from here?....

As a gunsmith I have worked on both the remington and the (howa) vangard. I will take the Howa any day over the remington. Just my 2 cents worth. Geri 0
