66-3 was first made in 1986 so your 66-2 would be pre 1988.

The "-2" change signified the beginning of the non pinned and recessed Model 66. 66-2's were built from '82-'86 Your S/N indicates approximately a mid 1983 production date....

ATF- The three letter prefix on the serial started in 1982. Any gun with a ABC or BAC or similar serial cannot have been made prior to 1982.

Actually, that type of serial prefix began in 1980 on the 'L' frame (Models 586/686), and in 1983 on other S&W models.

    jkks,

As ATF says, your gun appears to be from 1982, and is among the last of the K frames to have the letter 'K' as part of the serial prefix.

To clarify things (or further confuse the issue[xx(]), S&W began using the letter 'K' prefix (on K frame guns) in 1946 beginning with S/N K101. After nearly a million had been built, in 1970 the prefix became 1K, then 2K, etc., and continued like that up to prefix 311K in 1983 when all S&W's were numbered with the 3 letter/4 digit type of serial numbers.....

The L frame guns (586/686) have always used the new numbering system from their beginning in 1980.

    Clear as mud, huh? [:0][:D]
