Attn: V35 - Paterson Revolver Question

I'm considering buying a reproduction Paterson Revolver. Since photos of this revolver show no loading lever - how is the gun loaded? Is there a special tool I need to load it? Any info will be appreciated.

  This link shows a loading tool that is used to load the cylinders of cap & ball revolvers. Many of the dealers who handle c & b revolvers carry this or similar tools. It's much easier and safer when you use this tool. Try Dixie Gun Works.

  The Paterson had a separate lever that plugged into the wedge slot when the barrel was removed. It had a plunger on it that forced the ball into the chambers.

  V35: Thanks for getting back to me. I purchased a reproduction Paterson yesterday. The Revolver came with some kind of separate tool without any explanation in the very general instruction manual covering a multitude of guns but no specific instructions concerning the tool and how to use it. Are you telling me that I must remove the barrel to use this tool to load the cylinders? Is there any additonal information you can provide about the loading and shooting of this revolver?

  Yes,in any case the wedge has to come out and the barrel has to come off to load because the Paterson loading tool slides into the wedge slot which is used as a fulcrum for the Paterson loading tool to lever the balls into the chambers. The tool I believe is a combination tool with a screwdriver end followed by two half round sections that provide the rocker when inserted into the wedge slot of the cylinder pin.
  Drive out the wedge with a wooden mallet and tap the barrel forward and off.
  So you don't mark the finish on the cylinder while removing it,partially cock the hammer to retract the cylinder locking bolt. I don't know if the Paterson hammer has a half cock, loading position. The Paterson was made in several calibers as small as .28. I don't know if any of them had a side relieved enough to load a ball from the side without removing the barrel.
  I've never owned one so this is the best I can do.
