Marlin 1894 lever gun in .357
I found a nice Marlin lever gun in 357mag. I love this round in revolvers. I was wondering, is it a good deer round? I'm sure it would be a good plinker, how about shooting hogs, or varmits? This is the short carbine, 16 or 18 inch barrel, by the way. The barrel is ported. This gun is like new, but priced about $100 less than a new one would be. Thanks.

A friend of mine bought one years ago and loves it, I would think it would be kind of light for Hog's. I had one in 44 mag and loved it, dont know why I traded it off. Oh wait a min. I remember why, I gave $60.00 for it used and traded it for a model 70 winchester 300 win mag with a scope.[:D][:D][:D] 0 -
Thanks. I wasn't sure about the hogs either, maybe old sick ones.

My brother in law uses it and he's had good luck with it. Even though the specs say otherwise, he says the deer hit by it drop rather quickly compared to his 30-30 lever.
I use a Ruger .44 carbine and it is really rough on deer under 100 yards (although I typically try to keep it under 75 due to it only having open sights with a short sight radius).0 -

These are great hog guns. I shot many feral hog with the 158 grain winchester soft point. They do the job under 100 yards. I was once forced to use the 125 grain winchester soft point in 38 special, because I ran out, of the magnums. I shot a hog on the run in the rib section twice, it ran 40 yards, and was deader than a door nail. The 357 is great, it is not for elk or moose, or bears, or lions, but it great for deer sized game. I do not advise hollow points in this caliber. You need the penetration. 0 -
THEY MAKE A VERY GOOD HOG GUN AND DOUBLE AS A BRUSH GUN FOR
DEER, ALSO . THERES SO MANY DIFFERENT WEIGHTS & BULLET TYPES AVALIBLE IN 357 MG. AND BEING A PISTOL ROUND IT'S PERFORMANCE IN A 16.5" BARREL IS
IMPREESSIVE. GOOD LUCK !

My buddy has one of these and boy is it fun to shoot! I hit him up to sell it to me on a regular basis but he declines. I wouldn't sell it if I had it either.
