Looking to buy an SKS - looking for advise
I am looking to buy an SKS, preferably new, still in the grease. Given the following considerations, what type should I buy:
1) Cost is a definite consideration, I'm looking to keep the cost down.
2) After I purchase the rifle, I would like to modernize it a bit with a simple new synthetic stock to get the feel I would like.
3) I want the rifle to last, I do a lot of shooting when I go to the range.
4) I would like to possibly put a bi-pod on.
5) Would like the rifle to be fairly accurate - not looking for a spray-100-rounds-as-fast-as-I-can-washing-machine-blaster ;-)
Basically, I've heard good things about these rifles, and I enjoy shooting the 7.62 round. I have seen different SKS models sold on auction here brand new for as low as $100. I would like to be into my SKS project for $220 or less.

You are looking at a post ban rifle that is new or in very good condition. The SKS much like the AK line are very durable rifles. I do not know of any SKS to stay away from. Since you are going to modify it you inow your cost will go up with the modifications. Look at what you want the over all cost to be. Then Look at the SAR 1. You may find that when you match apples to apples the SAR1 is a better choice than a souped up SKS. My 2 cents [8D]

Forgive my stupidity - but what is a SAR1? 0 -
The SAR 1 is the 7.63X39 AK varient make by Romania. They make a SAR3 in 5.56 and a SAR2 in the Russian 22 calabur round as well. They are very well made and will do everything the SKS will do and maybe just a little better.

I have two sks's one yugo and one chinese. You can get the yugos for aroung 120 of the action sight but I haven't been very happy with mine. My chinese on on the other hand is great, it shoots good and doesn't jam very often. I've heard the russian ones are the best but there a little more expensive than the ones I own

If your going to get a SKS, best get one with a chrome bore.
Theres still some of that corrosive ammo floating around.
Guy at work, shot some in his Mini 30. Didn't clean it right away, had to use Liquid Wrench to free up the bolt. Barrel looked like a sewer.0 -
The Yugos are available new for around 150-175 bucks, you can find Norincos for around the same. Either one work great and have decent accuracy. I have a Romanian that I bought "unissued" and it will shoot very, very well even out to 300 yds. If you can find one in good condition you might consider picking it up, the ones I've seen seem to be fitted very well.

I agree with most of the posts on this thread......I own a few SKS rifles of myself...I have the Chinese, Yugoslavian, Russian, and Romanian makes..... they all function well and are still priced pretty low. Just look for one in decent condition with a chrome lined bore. Good Luck[:)]

If you're going to restock it anyway AIM has Albanian SKS's for $79-$89 with cracked stocks.
I just ordered one for myself & am hoping for the best. Will post.

I 2nd the Sar1 recommendation lots of fun to be had with them AK's. Though they cost double what an SKS will go for ($350+ vrs $175+). I ordered my SKS a good 7 years ago, it is a Chinese postban paratrooper (short barrel) version. Mine is accurate as can be but after shooting a couple different variants over the years I realized that they are all pretty much that way. Like Barto said, check out AIM before you go to get what the currrent price range for new guns is.

Figure on $25 to $50 increase on SKS's at a Gunshow or gunshop. They need to make a profit somehow.

After reading all the responses here, and doing more research, I still want to purchase an SKS. I have narrowed myself to the following 3 options:
1) A Yugo SKS unissued and still in the grease for $169. I would have to pay $20 s/h + $45 to my FFL holder
2) A Chinese paratrooper SKS, used but in great condition at my local dealer for $279. I might be able to make a *small* deal on this gun.
3) A Yugo SKS used described as NRA "very good" condition for $139. Again I would have to pay $20 s/h + $45 to my FFL holder.
Keep in mind, I am planning to replace the stock with a synthetic. However, I could keep all the original parts.
