Best Personal Defense Shotgun
Looking for a personal defense shotgun that is the smallest length that is legal. I am not sure what it is but I thought it was barrel length 18" or overall 24" long. Need some recommendations and someone to clarify the law reguarding a shotgun. Thanks I live in Florida.

Mossberg or Remington either one will do the job. I have a 20 ga Mossberg with the barrel cut down to 20", ported and the forcing cone reamed out. You are correct on the 18" minimum barrel length and 24 inches minimum overall.

If you happen to be left handed, the only shotgun to get is an Ithaca model 37.
If you happen to be carrying any other shotgun at port arms, left handed, and chamber a round, it CAN dump the round out on the ground.
It's a long story, and I was lucky that I didn't need to fire the Remington 870 I had, but it DID happen to me. The next morning, I traded the Remington for an Ithaca.

Actually Section 921(a)(5) defines a short barreled shotgun as any shotgun having a barrel or barrels under 18 inches in length or any shotgun or weapon made from a shotgun with an over all length of less than twenty six inches. Is this shotgun going to be carried with you, used for home defense (which I oppose), taken along for protection in your car or out on a boat (since I see you have two "marine" shotguns on your list already)?

If you go under 26" OAL or 18" barrel length you are either looking at a short barreled shotgun (if you have a butt stock) or an Any Other Weapon (pistol grip only and made from a shotgun which came from the factory WITHOUT a butt stock- like a Mossberg Camper). These are National Firearms Act weapons and mandate (among other things) registration and a $200 tax for the SBS or a $5 tax for the AOW if you purchase these from a dealer. Since you live in Florida this should not (at least in theroy) be a difficult situation...just be willing to jump through a few hoops.

A Benelli M1 (semiauto) or M3 (selective semi-auto/pump) will definately do the trick.
The M3 is used a lot by law enforcement, but if you have a pistol grip or folding stock they require a stamp if made after '91 (I believe)...0 -
Pending your finances on what you want to spend. I have a Winchester Defender 12 gauge. 18" cylinder bore and a standard stock. I did have the barrel threaded for winchokes. The gun can be used for a variety of applications of hunting, skeet shooting, and home defense. A shotgun is the best home defense. Be fore warned them fancy pistol grips will hurt your hand after you fire a few rounds of high brass or 3" magnums. FN sells a similar shotgun with the barrel already threaded. People will laugh when they see a 18" shotgun used at the local stillboard shoot but with a special choke it will actually outperform all takers(unless they have the same choke) 0 -
Get a pump action shotgun,(you want the shortest legally possible,right?) maybe a Remington 870 or Winchester 1300 with an 18" barrel. I'd recommend a Mossberg 500 or 590, but in my opinion there are more accessories available for the 870 and 1300, you can also add a magazine extension to the 870 or 1300........the Mossberg models won't accept one.
Once you pick one up, you can buy different accessories to configure your shotgun to your needs and likings.
I have a Remington 870 Express 12 ga. synthetic with a 28" barrel for hunting.....I recently purchased an 18" barrel for it and added a heat shield,mag. extension, as well as a top-fold stock. I did this so I could use it for home defense, so now when I go hunting all I have to do is re-configure it and go.[8D]

gunner, my winchester 1300 defender holds 7 + 1 and it is stock. I almost get tired shooting it empty. 0 -
Mossberg 500 and 590 12ga with the Knoxx folding recoil stock and ghost ring sights. Have both and very good and practical shooters.
Look around and try a few out and get the one that fits you and suits yoour personal needs and practice, practice.
Pack slow, fall stable, pull high, hit dead center.

I'd agree with BambiHunter.
You simply can't go wrong with any model of Benelli.
I'd also say Benelli M1 or M4 is Semi-auto is an option.
Then Benelli M3, if you'd like to be able to switch from Semi-auto to Pump-action - The M3 can be converted from Semi to pump in a flash.
Maybe Benelli Nova is you'd like a straight pump-action.
All these are high-quality guns, cost a bundle though - but works under ANY circumstance that you might throw at them.
Don't do anything that I've allready done - That'd be just plain STOOOOOOPID.0
