k98k post-war rebarrel

I'm looking to buy a mid 30's k98k that is entirely matching...everything, except it has a 30/06 barrel. The barrel appears to be of a correct military configuration and the finish matches the rest of the rifle. There are no additional markings on the barrel

I'm guessing this is a post war rework. Is there a way to tell what country it was rebuilt for and if it is a "real" military rebuild?

  Without some type of markings as to the ownership (country) or manufacture (arsenal/gunsmith) you are pretty much out of luck.
  
  A backward search of all European countries that used the 30-06 as an official or semi-official caliber in the post-war era might narrow the field. I believe the Danes used it, and possibly others.
  
  Are you sure it is 30-06 and not 8X60? The Swedes used this caliber in an otherwise issue German K98k.

  k-98's from the mid 30's should be 8 mauser unless someone faked a number to make it appear to be matching
  
  the thing that scares me is that we could be living in someone else's own reality

  In my previous post, I neglected to ask what proofing is on the barrel? If this is a government rebuild there WILL be some telltale proofs. Examine carefully as I have found some proofs only after removing the stock.

  Try Robert Ball's "Mauser Military Rifles of the World".
  
  I think Israel and a few South American countries (like Colombia) used .30-'06 Mausers.

  Weren't some 98ks reworked into 30-06 by returning GIs? Is 7.92 stamped on top of the receiver ring next to the barrel?

  Mauser 98's were made in 30-06 for several South American Countries in the Mid 1930's...Peru, is one that comes to mind....Look at the CREST on the Reciever...If its a South American Country, then in all likelyhood its the Caliber in question and Not a rebarreled Action...

  The Norwegians used K98k's in .30/06 as reserve
  and practice rifles into the 70's, and they are
  often found with new tubes and properly modified.

  FN made 30-06 barrels for the Argentine navy 98s as well and, as one Mauser expert told me, never say never with a Mauser as anything is possible.
  There were not only small contracts to police and forest services there were unmarked contracts to insurgents.
  Money was all that was needed in the cash strapped 30's to get whatever one wanted. As I am told.
  In Argentina the interservice rivalries led to diffeent cailbers from the 7.65.
  I especially like those 98 short rifles in 7X57 . Sweet!
  CZ made some small contract guns with 19inch barrels and Mannlicher stocks. The orders were too small for a run so they converted G-98s, cutting the stocks and rebarreling to the short (19") 7X57.
  I have one it being a very handy little rifle and a favorite.
