New, used, it doesn't matter. personally, I like the older 700's better, they have more class. The ideal senerio would be to buy a rifle that has been carried more than it has been fired, and salvage the action. Do with the rest what you want.

I would save the money and buy a donor action if one is available,...I have only ever purchased one new one for my custom build-ups. The gunsmith will true the bolt face, true the action face, lap the lugs, true the rear bolt contacts, true the lug recesses, and so on. After all those surfaces have been machined,..other than the exterior finish, the action is basicly new. Throw on a double thick, hardened recoil lug and you are in competition with any custom action around. my used 700actions, after gunsmithing, shoot just as good as the new one I used for the last project. There should be no stresses in the action if it were machined and treated correctly,.....the gunsmith will pick up on the way the metal "feels" when it cuts and tell you if it was incorrectly heat treated.

why chase the game when the bullet can get em from here?....
