25-06
Is this a rare round these days? I have been to a few stores Cabels & Bass Pro to name a few and they only have a few. I was wondering why, it is a versitable round and shoots really flat?

Hi,I just bought a 25-06 today & it should be here next week.I bought it for varmits & whitetail hunting.I was just wondering what is the max range for the 25-06 & what kind of accuracy everybody was getting with there 25-06?I can't wait to shoot the gun. Thanks! 0 -
Probably because it is a relatively newer caliber compared to others. It is the best 25 caliber (along with a .257 Ackersly). It is also climbing fast in popularity. Downside is it is slighlty more expensive for ammo.
For a flat shooting deer gun (without recoil), I say it is definately the way to go and it holds it's value better than a .243. Might also be getting a little potent if you want to keep hides on varmits.

I have a Rem. 700 in 25-06 that my wife's grandfather gave me over 20 years ago. I've taken it to the woods for deer but I'm not a serious hunter...mostly go along with friends, so I've never drawn blood. But I love the way the gun shoots--very accurate and mild recoil. Whenever I'm in the mood to trade guns...have traded away and acquired 4 or 5 in the past six months, the 25-06 stays in the closet. It's definitely a keeper. (No real help for you here...just enjoy talking about a fine gun.) 0 -
Actually the 25-06 has a fair following and it ain't that new (1969) when Remington standardized it. On the heavy side for varmints, great for deer. 0 -
One of the better antelope and deer chamberings around. Have had 2 in Ruger #1's - let both get away. Now shooting a 6.5-06, which does as well.

If you handload, you can load the .257 Roberts to within about 100fps of the .25-06.

He Dog, your right one could, but one could load a 25-06 to blow away anything the Bob could dream of.
This is a terrific caliber. I think its popularity has sufferd because everyone thinks that you have to shoot pumpkin balls at game to kill them. My 25-06 downd countless deer and elk and one Boon&Crocket bull moose. All with 117 factory loads. I wouldnt trade it for a 30-06 for anything!! I like the speed and flat shooting capabilities of the 25.0 -
Had my "25" built back in the '50's, on an old Enfeild. Never shot anything but 75gr. Hornady HP's. It has harvested many deer and antelope. Hundreds and hundreds of "dogs. Still going strong, but have replaced it, a couple years ago, with .257 Roberts Imp. Great cartridge. Will shoot with the 25-06 on less powder and recoil. GW. 0 -

If I could only have one rifle and heaven forbid that!...it would be a 25-06! From varmints to deer to bigger stuff if you want to use it, an all around great caliber! Remington standardized it in 1969 but Mr. A.O. Neidner built them all the way back around 1920!! The slow burning powders, IMR4350, IMR4831, IMR7828 weren't around then so it took awhile for the potential of the cartridge to be realized! Today we have a great selection of bullets and the propellents to get the job done! Once you try a 25-06, you'll never go back! GHD0 -

The 25-06 is not a new caliber. It never really caught on all that great, but it is an awesome caliber...one of my favorites. It's a very flat shooter and a fine caliber for what you have mentioned. It seems to be gaining more popularity lately, and I'll bet you start hearing more about it in the future.

OK so it is not brand new but "compared to others" it is relatively new. When I was started hunting in "81" the popular choices were .243, .270, 30-30 & 30-06. Now the 25-06 is the most popular in my area. Hence relativly new. No hand me down 25-06's around here.
About the only better round in a 25 would be the 257 Roberts Ackley Improved 40 Degree. Both rounds started out as Wildcats, but only the 25-06 made it to the factory which gives it an advantage in the ammo department (yes I called it a Akersly but I was tired).
