Western Field 550A help

I've got a fella asking if I can find him a replacement barrel for his old shotgun and I need a little assistance.

It's a Western Field 550A with a ventilated rib and is too old to have a serial number. I've determined this is a house brand version of the Mossberg 500A, but I'm unsure if a modern Mossberg 500 barrel will drop in this shotgun. Anyone here familiar with these?

Can anyone tell me what span of years Mossberg marked these as Western Field guns? Can someone explain the specific differences between the Mossberg 500 and 500A? Is a barrel available that will allow multiple choke options without costing him more than the gun is worth?

  i have a westernfield 550a and i have mossberg barrels that fit on it...it is the same gun as a 500...tom

  I was wanting to save him some cash and pick one up on the auction board instead of having to go through GPC/Numrich. I just wanted to make sure I was shopping for the correct barrel.

  These people have all the info on all these old discontinued Mossbergs. They are very helpful, and have links to parts for these and other Mossbergs. BTW Mossberg 500 barrels do fit.
