Scope That Won't Stay Zero'ed
Hi guys, another problem that I have been having, is a scope that I sold to a friend, and lazer sighted in for him, will not stay zeroed. I mounted the scope, bore sighted it with the lazer, and then final zeroed it at the range. He picked it up, and went shooting, everything was fine until the next time he shot it again, and it was ten inches low! So he zeroed it again on paper, put it away for two days, and when he shot at a nice buck, it is again ten inches low!
This guy hunts all the time, and I do not believe he would tell me a BS story, but when he brought the gun and scope back to me to look over, it was perfectly zeroed, according to my lazer! What the hell gives? Have any of you Experts run into anything like this, and if so, how did you correct the problem?
I am waiting on pins and needles, so please give me your best thoughts! And remember, deer season ends in two weeks![:(]

Had the same problem with my cousin's 7mm Ultra. Was using a S&B scope with Leupold 30mm bases/rings that were mounted at a gun store. Would shoot fine when we sighted it in but we kept having to sight it in over again every time he used it. Went to Talley rings and bases and that cured it. I would think the bases and rings would be the place to start.

How are you sighting it in? Warm barrel or cold? If he shot a deer with it, it was probably cold. Again if he shot it after you sighted it in, it was again probably cold. That it is off 10" low everytime is interesting also. Sooner or later you are going to run out of adjustment on the scope. If I read you correctly, you already adjusted it 20 or 30 inches. 0 -
I've had scopes that wouldn't hold zero between use and I had to send them back for repair,just my .02,Bob 0 -
I've got a Leupold Vari-X III 4.5x14x50 that has (or had, I haven't verified it yet) that problem. I started with rings and mounts. If that doesn't fix it then I'll remove the scope and send it in. Many scope manufacturers only charge for shipping if there's nothing wrong with it. If that doesn't fix it, then I'd have a 'smith check the barrel to receiver fit... 0 -
what type of ammo did you sight it with? is this the same ammo as he is using?
why chase the game when the bullet can get em from here?....

Are the Action screws tight? What kind of Mounts? are all screws tight on mounts? Is the crown on the barrel good? As JustC asked what ammo, same bullet weight? what caliber and Make is the Rifle? Wood or syn. stocked?
As you can see their are a LOT of things that can cause that problem, and they can drive you NUT'S. COOD LUCK.0 -
Thanks guys, great info. I tried almost all of what you suggested, and narrowed it down to the scope. I used the same ammo as my customer did, and got the same results, so I sent the scope in to the factory, and we'll see what they come up with.

Couple quick tips to try with rifle FIRMLY held in position:
> Look at target, with rifle FIRMLY held still, grapping the eyepiece,..gently try to move it in different directions. If the reticle/target move, it's the scope.
>Remove adjustment caps. Pushing down/in firm & gentle on the adjustment knobs. If the target moves,..it's the scope.
>Looking at a target @ low power, increase the magnification. If the target moves,...it's the scope. Watch for movement of the eyepiece also.
>Check out adjustment range. If too much is used in one direction, it's the scope. BUT, many times correcting why so much is used will solve the scope's internal problem.

Guns & Glass, great info! I tried all of what you suggested, and everything led to the scope being defective! So we will see. But the info you came up with was great! I will use it in every scope mount that I deal with from this day forward!
