Recoil Reducers-Which is Better?
Hey guys, anybody out there familiar with hydraulic recoil reducers for shotguns, and do they work well or not?
I am an avid trap shooter, and am trying to reduce the recoil in a friends gun, seeing as he just had shoulder surgery, about two months ago, and shooting with the set-up he has now, hurts him for a couple of days afterwards. I didn't want to get into cutting the stock, and installing a reducer that actually moves, the one I am talking about is the little cylinder that mounts in the stock, and you don't even know it is there.
I appreciate any info on this subject.

Are you thinking of the ones that are filled with mercury? They do work, but they add undue weight to the gun. I'd first start with a very good recoil pad such as Limbsaver. If that still doesn't do enough and you don't mind the weight try the one in the stock. If that don't work THEN port the barrel (if that don't work get a smaller gun! [;)])
They do reduce the recoil, but in my opinion, a good recoil pad reduces FELT recoil more.0 -
Hey guys, thanks for all that replied. And bambihunter, what is a "Limbsaver" and where can I get one. I have never ehard of that brand. I also forgot to mention that this gun has already been ported, and has an excellent pad on it, a Pachmayer Decellerator, but I don't know how that stacks up aganist the "Limbsaver".

Well, the Pachmayer is (in my opinion) the second best one next to limbsaver. For the money, I don't think I'd switch 'em.
The only recoil reducer of the type that's left (after counting out porting and pad) is the hydraulic (or similiar) type. The kind I have experience with is this: http://www.benelliusa.com/firearms/accessories2.tpl (down towards the bottom).

Another option is to lighten up the loads. I assume you've already lightened it up, but it is sometimes forgotten. If he's using 1 oz or 1 1/8 oz then switching to 7/8 oz can make some difference too.0 -
the mercury ones are called 'counter coils.' the old spring and balance ones work better though. cant remember the name of it! im away from my desk! you said its for trap. good! keep in mind, mercury reducers only work on horizontal shooting. once you elevate the gun straight up, the mercury pools. therefore, it wont work! sloshing back and forth is how it works. good luck!
