Remington Model 58 & 878 shotgun

I have a Remington Model Sportsman 58, 12 gauge shotgun. I heard that the Remington Model 878, 12 gauge barrel is interchangable with the Model 58. Is this true?

    yes. The 878 is pretty much the same as a sportsman 58 except that it has a compensating piston so you don't have to manually select low power or high power ammo.

    I have found the Remington 870 pump barrels (standard weight) will also fit, but you need to drill the two gas ports.

    the 878 is VERY rare. to modify an 878 to 58 is like shooting yourself in the foot. i hope all you wanted was info and dont plan on doing it! man....878's belong in the museums! only made for one year before the 1100!

    bobski, all I was wanting ,.was another option for extra barrels for the 58. Thanks to all for the info.

    Arent 58 barrels interchageable with the 11-48 barrels too?

    This is somewhat off the subject, but does everyone know that when thinking about buying a model 58, one should take a close look at the receiver, to check for the possibility of a crack.

    I hope it is okay for this remark.

    wm69, the M11-48 is a long recoil mechanism, and the M58 is a gas-operated mechansim. The barrels are therefore not interchangable.

    thanks for the update on the bbl need. btw...if anyone does find a 878 skeet gun, let me know! i need one or two!
