Rifle for son???
I need help in selecting an all around rifle for my 18 year old son who has some experience shooting/hunting. He is right handed and will not be reloading. Thinking of spending in the $1,500 range.
How about some suggestions on make/model, caliber, scope/mounts.

I'm sure some folks will jump in here
with some more exotic suggestions,but how
about a Ruger M77.in .270(good all around
caliber and ammo is plentiful) w/a Leopuld
Vari X II or III 50mm scope.By the time you
add in the sling,case etc.,You should still
have money left over for ammo.
A Remington M 700 or Browning A-bolt would
fill the bill as well for about the same $$$$.

I like the Remington rifles, Savages are VERY accurate and now have their new adjustable triggers. Caliber is game, terrain dependant. You can't go wrong with the 30-06 and related (25-06, 270, 280, 338-06)calibers for all-around usefulness...esp. if you'll reload. I choose the Rem orSavage rifles IMHO because that will leave $$ for HIGH quality optics (scope sight, binos, spotting scope, range finder). May want to consider a basic reloading kit as well.

How about a Ruger standard Mark II in .257 Roberts (425.00-450.00)(rings are included) with a Burris 3-9X40 (200.00) ammo (20.00) for a total of around 680.00
and then also get him a Remington 700 chambered in .300 Win mag (500.00-550.00) Burris rings and bases (35.00) Burris 3-9X40 (200.00) and ammo (20.00) total 755.00-805.00
Grand total 1435.00-1485.00 (approx)
Just a thought.

P.S. Also the Ruger has to be in a 257 Roberts or it doesn't count.

Winchester Model 70 chambered for 30-06. Leupold Vari-X II 2x7. Ammo is by FAR the most easily found (every gun shop/sporting goods store/hardware store {like Coast-to-coast} in the country carries it.

Just my opinion, but I would try to find either a Kimber of Oregon model 89 in 06 or 270, (hard to find and expensive, but with the kind of money you are talking about, not impossible), OR get him a pre 1964 Winchester Model 70 in either of the above calibers. The workmanship on guns made since the late 60's early 70's just isn't what it used to be. Granted you can still get good guns made today, but go get a cheap rifle from the 50's and compare it to one of the high end guns made today, and the older gun will have a lot more attention to detail (fewer machine/tool marks, better fit and finish). They're just better guns. Winchester's quality went throught the floor in the early 60's so try and get one made in the late 50's. You can't go wrong with an old model 70. For the scope, get a leupold. They are simply the only scope (that is still made) that I will use. You get what you pay for. Leupold's are expensive, but are worth every penny. I've seen hunting rifles for kids---or so the salesman told me---chambered in .308 Winchester, which might not be too bad of an "all-purpose" caliber. Perhaps a Remington, something in the 700 series? 0 -
So you wan't to spend 1500 on a new rifle for the boy. A general all around shooter. I think that calls for a M1A National Match 308 http://www.gunbroker.com/auction/ViewItem.asp?Item=12391272. If It was just for hunting maybe a SAKO with a nice Leupold scope. I like Browning and Remington 700's as well if you want to save some of that money.

I like the pre 64 model 70 idea. Also like the ideas of getting two rifles in different calibers with good optics. One small bore the other a big game caliber like 30-06. You don't say what the rifle will be used for the most so I can not say what caliber but make sure he can handle the recoil. You don't say if he is recoil shy or not. Many young shooters are. My choice would be Leupold for optics.. Whatever you buy put good optics on it and make sure it fits him well. 0 -
With $1500 in your pockets you should be able to buy the gun, scope, ammmo,the hunting clothes and license he needs for the year! Find a gunshop with a good selection, take your son along and make it a father/son experience. There are many good make/models of sporting arms out their, allow his imput since it will have to fit him and his needs.
