chopped barrel on sks
I have a yugo sks and was thinking of doing some modifications to it. I payed less than a hundred for the gun so if I screw it up I'm not out to much. Any way I was wondering if I cut the barrel down to 18 inches will that affect the gas presure that moves the bolt. Or will there be any other side affedts from doing this. I no I will loose some accuracy but its not very accurate any way. Any advice would be helpful.

First off, if you shorten the barrel; accuracy will tend to degrade due to the shorter sight radius, and your skills (or lack of)in making the muzzle crown perpendicular to the bore.
I would remove the handguard and stock, and measure from the front of the closed bolt a full 18 1/2 inches and see if that's before or after the gas port. Just stick a cleaning rod down the barrel, mark where the muzzle crown meets the rod, then measure up from the unmarked end. Lay this rod next to the barrel so the muzzle and mark line up, and see if the proposed cut is going to negate your gas system.
Have you tried several kinds of ammo to see which one(s) your gun likes? The SKS was never intended to be a match rifle, but with some tuning and smoothing; it could be very close to a target rifle. How "bad" does it shoot, really? Are they 3", 100yd groups, or more like 8" ?

I guess that you could do it (I assume that you want to have a gunsmith remove the front barrel extension). The cycling should not be affected, but there would be a couple of problems: the exposed threads would be damaged in use, and you have to remove the cleaning rod & bayonet. And, of course, you could only fire it with a scope.
This seems to me to be a project that's just not worth doing. The barrel is now only a little over 20"; shortening a carbine-size rifle by 2-3" isn't going to gain you much of anything.
You got a good deal on it; use it as is, & it can only appreciate in value. Mutilate it, & no one will want to give you much for it.

Thanks for the input guys. this rifle was farely accurate but I have a nice chinese one that will do 1 1/4 inch groups at a hundred yards. I have gone the other direction with it including a Bushnell elite 4200 6-24x40, milled trigger assembly, muzzle brake/flash suppresor, druganov stock, and bipod. This one I am working on now has a ramline ultra light stock, I just ordered a weaver style base so I can mount a holosight on it. With this gun I am going for compactness and light weight.

What you want is a "paratroop" SKS--there were a number of Chinese ones that were imported in the early 1990's. I remember almost buying one at a sporting goods store close-out sale for $70! (Kick myself again when I think of that!) I've seen them more recently for sale in the $300 range. 0 -
As COMPETENTONE stated the parotrooper is the shorter "carbine" SKS and is probably what your looking for.If you decide to get one,just make sure you keep the gas-port extra clean because as the bullet passes the gas-port it has less distance to travel before exiting the muzzle and I have seen a few "short-cycle" when the gas-port was a little dirty.All it took to fix the problem was remove the upper hand guard and clean the carbon out of the gas-port hole.

The paratroopers also suffer from a shorter gas impulse time because the bullet (and gas pressure) leave the barrel 4" earlier than the regular SKS and will not drive the piston all the way home sometimes. A lot of them will prefer hotter ammo to compensate for this. This is one of my paras, they come with a 16.5" barrel and are pretty handy. You're going to have a lot of work ahead of you in turning down the Yugo barrel, if you want a shorty get the Norinco.

Built it, only fits the paratrooper and connects to the bayo lug and the cleaning rod hole. Has standard Weaver rails on it. If you get the para or get the yugo down to para specs let me know and I can build another. I'm going to build a few more soon for my other Paras.
