Remington 700 or Ruger M77?
Greetings all, I am in the process of buying a new gun for deer season. All my guns were stolen in June and currently had all Remington 700. I am looking at the .270, and want some feedback on Ruger and Remington, and what you guys prefer. It has to be soon because deer season starts for me towards the end of November. I am a college student, so money is some what of a factor.

I've owned both over the years.Both are
excellent.As far as personal preference
goes,I liked the Ruger over the 700.My last
Ruger MkII .270 was an excellent shooter,but
I did not like the 3-position safety(just me maybe).
I sold it and replaced it w/a Browning A-bolt(.270)
I'm not sure,but I think the Brownings are in the same
price range,so you might want to look at them.
I'll have another M77 someday,but it will be the old
style w/the tang safety.You can't go wrong w/any of the three.

As for which rifle... there isn't any real difference in the two, it is just a matter of personal preference. You might also consider looking at a Winchester Model 70 (what would be more fitting than to have a Winchester rifle to go along with your cartridge choice?), or a Browning A-Bolt Classic Hunter. The cost of all four makes is very comparable. Since you are on a limited budget, you should also consider buying anyone of them as a used rifle.

Not to muddy up the waters of choice, but I was trying to make the same choice last year. I ended up buying a brand new Tikka White tail hunter, .30-06 for $470 out the door (taxes the shabang). It shoots rounds on top of rounds with a Nikon 3X9 scope! My second choice was the Ruger. 0 -

You can't go wrong with the .270 in either of those. I don't own a Ruger M77, but I do know it's a good rifle. The reputation of the Remington M700 speaks for itself. I have a M700 Varmint Synthetic in .308 Winchester that's a tack-driver. I have always liked the walnut stock on a Ruger as well.

Weatherby is now making the Vanguard line at about that price point, in the Weatherby Magnum calibers. I saw some at, I think Wal-Mart, with synthetic stocks and stainless barrels, in .300 Weatherby Magnum for a little over $500. Kinda shocked me! Don't know if they had a .270 Wby Mag. I'll go into town and check in a little bit.
I'm a fan of the extended "maximum point-blank range" that the Weatherby Magnum calibers offer. Makes me look like a better shot than I really am!0 -
To stick with your criteria, go with the Remington.
To muddy the water look at Walmart at the Winchesters in .270 they are about 375.00 including scope and a buddy of mine says it shoots pretty good. He shoots the 130 grain ballistic tips in the Federal Premium line. Close to 1" groups at 100 yards, 3 shot groups.
I have a Browning that shoots around 1" groups and I paid more.
I also have to suggest that you look real hard at a 257 Roberts in the Ruger. It will drop them at 250 yards, if you do your part and they are easier on the shoulder. (and a hoot to shoot)

Extremely sorry to hear of the loss - I know you feel violated and frustrated.
Looking for a new rifle today, I'd first take a peek at a Winchester Mod 70 Classic, then a Ruger and 3rd, a Browning A-Bolt.
Won't go far wrong with any of these.

Sorry to here anyone has lost there firearms to a thief. Witch ever rifle you chose you can't go wrong. I have both in my collection and I also have Winchester, Browning, Weatherby and Tikka rifles also. I still grab my Remington 700 338 mag when I head out west on a hunt. But I would not fell under guned or at a disadvantage with a Ruger rifle in a 338 mag either.

I think you will find that the Ruger will be the cheaper of the two if you are going to buy used. I personally like the 700 better, however the Ruger is a good gun. 0 -
it probably boils down to what everyone currently has.
the rugers have the nice integral scope mount but their triggers are very harsh out of the box. remington 700 would be my top choice. savage also has come a long way especially with the accutrigger.0
