rem 700.270 or .308
I am in the market for a rem 700 in either the bdl model in .270 or the vs model in .308. I would like to hear from any of you out there that may have either of these guns and what type of optics you are using.thanks

Go for the .308... it has considerably better ammo/reloading selections, and it is more accuarate than the 270 (though not by any significant amount). I use Leupold scopes almost exclusively on all of my bolt-action rifles (Vari-X II 2x7s and Vari-X III 3x9s are my favorite), but I have an M8-4X on a few rifles as well. The one exception is my Winchester Model 54 30-06 GOV'T (circa 1927) with an original Lyman Alaskan 2.5X on it (it is a nostalgia thing with me).

Depends if your hunting or target shooting. If your hunting 270win hands down, target shooting 308. Or buy both I did and never regreted it[:D]. 0 -

I agree with CHUCK, you need both! I have a .270 in the Rem 700BDL series fitted in a Ram-line synthetic stock topped with a Bushnell Rangemaster 6X. I have had this rifle for nearly 25 years and it shoots GREAT! My reloads are a 130 gr Hornday SP or the Remington Core-loc pushed by 54grs of IMR4350. This has been my standby hunting load for here in the wilds of PA. It will shoot three-quarter inch groups @ 100 yards and is very accurate in the brush where you have to "thread the needle" to reach your intended target. I have made numerous head or neck shots on whitetails due to this being the only available target. I have stretched a shot on a whitetail to 300+ yards and dropped it in it's track.
On the other side of the coin, I have a Rem 700BDL in the .308 setting in a Six-Enterprises synthetic stock and topped with a 6-24X BSA target scope. I shoot only Federal match 168 gr BTHP loads from it. This is used as a law enforcement weapon now, but it started it's day as a long range silhouette rifle, with a state class A win.
I have used .308's in lever action Winchesters for whitetails and never had a problem that way. You can't go wrong with either or both.

You cant really say the .308 is more accurate. It depends on a lot of factors, whos shooting, what kind of rest you have, bullet grain and type, wheather. Anyways, go with the .270!

Oh but I can... the bullet selection available for the .308 contains some of the highest ballistic coefficients available... something that can NOT be said of the limited bullet selection for the 270 Win. There is a good reason why certain military units (and other special OPs groups) use .308 caliber rifles. Also, if the 270 was as good as the .308 caliber, don't you think a lot more people would be using it?
I am not knocking the 270 cartridge... it is a truly fine hunting cartridge, but it does have more limitations than does the .308 caliber (which includes all of the other cartridges such as 30-06, 300 Win Mag, 300 H & H, 300 Wheatherby, etc.)
Given the choice between the two, I will always go for the .308. Now if the other choice was a 7mm... well, now it gets much tougher (my favorite is the 280 Rem).

What do you mean more people use the .308 than than .270. Do you have a list of all the rifles ever purchased or something??

Both are good, but for the reasons Burt H cited, including better inherent accuracy (all other things being equal), and the much greater choices in factory ammo or reload components, I would also choose the .308 over the .270. Like a lot of others here I have both.
My top choices in optics are Burris, Leupold, Nikon.
