What Kind of Pistol Was this?
On Saturday I was shooting at an indoor gun range in Independence (Crossfire). The guys next to me caught my attention because they were shooting a pistol in .40 S&W like I was. I also noted that one had a gym bag with the words POLICE on it and they were lousy shots. They couldn't put together even a 4 inch group...at 7 meters! Then I noticed something else.
The pistol would misfire. The shooters would work the slide, eject the round, rack in a new one, pull the trigger, it would "click" and they'd do this again until it did shoot. They were shooting American Eagle .40 cal and so was I. Also, the slide would go back and stop as if it were the last round, the shooter would smack the bottom of the magazine and the slide would go forward, and they'd keep on shooting. I thought the magazines might be bad but this was constant. The ejected unfired shells did have firing pin marks in the middle of their primers as well. But the accuracy was so bad I thought you'd be better off chucking this gun at someone than trying to shoot at them. My shooting partner told me that the gun had the name Smith and Wesson on the side.
The pistol was a two tone model that might have been polymer with a kind of flat gray stainless slide. There was no exposed hammer, just a black square where the hammer would protrude, so my guess is that it was double action only. In addition, the general shape od the pistol was similar to a Browning High Power but my shooting partner told me the gun said Smith.
I wanted to ask these fellows what gun they were shooting so I never bought one but they seemed pretty frustrated and ticked off so I left it alone.
Anyone know what kind of Smith auto pistol this might have been? It sure wasn't a compact. And what in the heck was wrong with it? I have been checking catalogues to see what this gun was. It was bad I can tell you that.

You've probably described the general shape of most of the S&W semi-automatic pistols lol.

For ridowns3: I was afraid that might be the case. I kept thinking the pistol was an FN High Power in .40 because that is what it looked like. But I didn't see any two tone models that were double action only on their website. And, my eagle eyed friend swore it said Smith on the Grips. 0 -

For Rufe-Snow, I think you are right. The Sigma 40 P looks the closest to what I saw. I could not believe that anyone could shoot so poorly, even cops, but this brand new looking pistol did everything it could not to function. I've had a jam or two in my time but never something so bad. And, the guys shooting automatically smacked the magazine everytime the slide locked back but there were still rounds in the magazine as if they were used to this. Police departments don't issue this pistol...do they?
