.338-06...?

New to this site and excited to find it!

I am interested in having my .30-06 Winchester M70 featherlight rebarreled in .338-06. The barrel is shot out of it and accuracy is gone. I know this is a somewhat unusual cartridge, but I really like the one a friend has and have seen this caliber do amazing things to elk, moose, and bear...all with relativly low recoil.

I have about $700-800 bucks to do it with. What company should I look into? I don`t need the gun to do better than 1.5 inch groups...but want at least that. I do hand load so that would help

I know nothing about rebarreling and would welcome any help you can provide.

    Well you definately are going to want to find a reputable gunsmith that has experience in rifle accurizing. I'd recommend either a Douglas or a Hart barrel.

    A friend just had a pre-64 30-06 mod 70 re-bored. What this involves is drilling out the barrel and re-rifleing it. He did this so as to keep the origional barrel on the rifle yet keeping it useful because of a bad bore. It cost him about $300 to have it done. Chambered it for 338-06 Ackley Improved. It will shoot1 1/2" groupes at 100 yard with a featherlight barrel.

    As you have a complete rifle which you just want to change the barrel on I would recommend ER Shaw's of Bridgeville Penn. I have personally had them do (4) project for me and will soon be getting them to do a couple more. ER Shaw is not a quick turn around organization, but they do reasonable quality work for a very reasonable price. The last time I dealt with them barrel were going for $130 or so, with $50 to chamber and install. Figure about $75 for re-bluing. What they won't do for you is match your contour. You will have to decide if you can live with one of their standard contours. There website lists all the dimensions. As you want to do a 338 cal you will have to use one of their No. 3 contours, which isn't light or slight. You can how ever request that they remove an inch or so from the chamber end to lighten up the overall weight. Their No. 3 is 26" long to begin with. My Win 338 win mag that they barreled for me shoots 2" at 200yds with there No. 3 barrel so I feel that I have a good opion here.     Agree with ern98, go with E.R.Shaw. Great barrels for the buck and accuracy will exceed the factories.

    I am a smith. Never the less - I strongly recommend the RE-BORING option. Preserves your original barrel finish and contour. And probably one third the cost of a new barrel, fitted, chambered, contoured and blued. I would recommend Cliff LaBounty in WA.

    The 338.06 is a great round to have. I have not tried mine out on an elk or bear but it does a jam up job on white tail deer. I have made shots form 30 yards to 200 and all deer dropped in there tracks. Unfortunatly Weatherby is the only company that offers this caliber in a factory gun. I built my 338.06 on a Remington 700 DBM action, 26" douglas Premium barrel, exhibition grade tiger maple stock. I prefer wood over synthetic stocks. Before anyone out there statrs scraming that the snythetic stocks are better, the fine wood is what I prefer. Snythetic stocks are a great help in very bad weather but they are ugley.
    The Douglas barrel is a little higher than most barrels but you get what you pay for. Mine will shot 1/2" MOA all day long with Nosler 185 gr balistic tip bullets. It also does about the same with the Nosler 210gr partition. Just find your self a good smith and he can fix you right up. Blueing, chambering, threading, and head spacing should not be over $300.00 The douglas #3 conture is real close to the factory barrels.

    If you don't mind waiting 3-6 months, and getting a barrel thats factory grade junk (or worse), installed by whatever minimum wage kid they hired last week, than by all means go with E.R.Shaw.
    If however you want it back within 3-8 weeks, and would like a quality barrel, installed by a real gunsmith that cares, try Pac-Nor.
    The other premimum barrel makers also offer gunsmithing services for there customers, and just a couple of e-mails to them should get you price and delivery times.
    Personaly, I purchase the barrel myself (usualy a Shillen from Brownells or Midway, depending on who has it in stock), and have a well known local smith do the work.
    Some guys like a mag full of lead, I still prefer one round to the head.
