Is there a web site that has the production dates for modern Smith and Wesson guns?

Hmmm.... This could be the site you're looking for. All you need to do is post the model of your gun(s) and the serial numbers including any letter prefix. You could replace the last 2-3 digits with X's.....

Why do that[?] Exactly what is the purpose of the "X's" other than to irritate serious collectors[?]

Sorry for the delay in responding, but I'm not sure that a serious collector would be irritated by the X's in the context of helping someone establish the age of their gun. The last two or three digits aren't necessary to determine the production year for these guns, and it's become an acceptable practice (especially on the 'net) to 'X' out the last 2-3 digits.
One reason, for example, is that if I posted the complete S/N for one of my guns, some unsavory character could conceivably report having a gun stolen and report to authorities that I had posted the S/N for their gun. Sounds far-fetched, but a little paranoia isn't necessarily a bad thing is it? [:D]
