AR-15 - please help me pick
I have never owned or been issued an M-16/AR-15 rifle. My issue long guns were the M-1, M-1 Carbine, and M-14. I'm thinking about getting an AR-15 style weapon - can y'all help me choose?
I'm looking at a Colt AR-15, that's marked "Target Match" and "HBAR II" it is new in the box, has a pretty short barrel, and the shoulder stock seems kinda short. The carry handle mounts on a Weaver rail (is that what it's called??) It has a very stout folding, spring loaded bipod, and comes with two low-cap mags and a hard case. They are asking $850.00 for it. Is that a decent price?
Would y'all recommend I consider other AR-15 style weapons? If so, which are the best, and what should I pay? What additional features should I be looking for?/

all the bells and wistles are nice
but to have them all you have to buy a pre-ban rifle
I have and recomind a plain a2 style ar-15(post-ban)
after you get used to it then you can branch out and with a match trigger, match barrel, good scope and so forth
if you watch the auctions here on gunbroker you can pick up a new ar-15 for about $700
but warning ar15s are addicttive
if you want to do more studying before you buy go to ar-15.com and read all about it, they also have several military manuals in pdf form

I bought a post-ban Bushy M4 carbine and have been very happy with it. 1000rd fired, 0 jams/FTF's. Very accurate too. Colts are nice too, but the new ones don't seem to be as well built as the one's made in years past.

Take a look at the "Gator 15" from Clark Custom. They are located in a small town outside of Shreveport, La. They are garanteed to shoot 1/2 min with match grade ammo or they never leave the shop. My hunting partner has one fitted with a holo sight and it is a great shooter. They are flat top models and well worth the selling price. God luck.

I'd stick to these and in this order: Colt, Bushmaster, & Armalite.......for a good starter AR-15.
There are also many other manufacturers out there who produce AR-15 rifles, but since it'll be your first, stick to the companies who are well established in the business. If you can spend more and buy an upgraded match model then do so! I'd highly recommend it! Because if you buy a standard model, you'll probably end up spending more having it upgraded.
The model(detachable carry handle-A3 model) you are looking at is a good choice at a pretty decent price, I'd say go for it![8D]

I'd definately recommend a Colt, and second what Dano says about the older SP-1. The problem there is the asking prices for those models these days. You're looking at $1200+, more or less, depending on whose asking. The last one I saw at a gun show last year was marked at $1400 if I remember correctly. I bought one in 1988 for $450, and at the time I was told I paid too much. Like an idiot I sold it in early 1991 for $400 to buy an AR-15A2 HBAR for $850. I still have the HBAR and it's very accurate, but it just makes me sick to think of that SP-1 that I gave away.

i have a bushmaster that i love. i think i paid about 700.00 for it. i have also heard that Colt is the best if you want to pay the price. 0 -

$850 is a great price for a Colt. If you got the cash flow jump on it.

If you can afford about 3 times that amount, I'd look at the Les Baer...probably the best AR-15 on the market.[:)]

Thanks again. I can't afford the $850, without moving some money around. It just looks like a helluva nice little carbine. Unfortunately, I've never been able to afford custom guns, much as I admire them. I have been able to pop for a couple of custom knives, though.
Anyone interested in a REALLY nice Ruger Ranch rifle, with lots of stuff? $750 with scope, $600 without? About 100 rounds through it. 2 stocks, muzzle brake with sight, original sight, about 10 high cap mags, factory box and paperwork. Blue and walnut, plus an extended synthetic stock. standard 5 shot mag, flip up scope covers on a nice 4X Redfield Widefield scope. I think I'll put this in the "For Sale" column.0 -
My recomendation is ither the Armalite or the Bushmaster. If you want a good shooter and dont want to spend alot of money Look at the AK type SAR3. My 2 cents. [8D]

I decided to keep my Mini-14. I'll scrounge up the money for an AR type, and then get it. I appreciate all your guidance. I guess I've decided not to get rid of any more guns - just add to what I've got...probably! 0
