I need to replace the gas cylinder on a Springfield Armory
M1 Garand, 1944-1945 manufacture...what is the difference
between a (narrow base and wide base), cylinder... which
would i need for the Springfield..

  Your rifle would use the so called wide base. Starting in early 1943 the width of the sight base was increased from .50" to .570". Although this seems a trivial item, the problem was a high number of rejections on early narrow based rifle which could not be properly sighted. Specs called for no more than three clicks of windage adjustment on the rear sight and there were a number of rifles which failed to zero correctly and had to be rejected out of hand. Adding just a bit of extra width to the front sight base allowed the sight assembly itself to be adjusted and this allowed the use of the rear sight to to make final sighting possible within the three click limit. This change cut down the number of rejected rifles considerably and freed them for combat. The correct screw for your front sight assembly would be the TYPE 3 which lacked the earlier rebated head for the discontinued front sight seal. Your screw head would be .361" for its full diameter and examples with smooth and knurled heads are observed and either would be considered correct on your rifle.
