Headed for a Fix (Re: "Mauser Misfire")

Well, thanks to all you knowledgable folk who tried to diagnose my Mauser misfire problem---and especially to the helpful fellow who e-mailed me, whose name unfortunately escapes me just now---I believe that I'm on my way to a fix for the problem. I took a good, hard look at the way the bolt closed, and I noticed that when I had the bolt as closed as I could get it, that little "rib" on the bolt-body wasn't completely aligned with the extractor-rib because the new bolt-handle keeps crashing into the tang on the back of the receiver. In other words, you pundits were right: The bolt-handle wasn't allowing the bolt from turning completely "shut", which must be causing a misalignment of the special "flange" on the firing-pin with the corresponding flange-shape inside the bolt-body. My intention is to double-check the alignment of the---what is it on the bolt-body? The guide-rib?---with the extractor-rib on a functioning Mauser, and file the necessary metal off of the tang to achieve proper alignment. I think---and hope---that this will cure the problem!

  Take it back to the gunsmith who did the bolt reshaping to clean up his work and remove metal from the proper surface of the bolt body.

  Hi, RT-- DON'T try to file away any metal from the bolt body of your rifle except possibly the under side of the bolt handle in order to obtain the proper alignment of the firing pin with the firing pin groove. This condition is explained in Roy Dunlap's book "Gunsmithing". If you don't have a copy of the book or your library doesn't, email me and I'll send you a photocopy that shows what needs to be done. I'd try to describe it but a picture is worth a bunch of words.

  Not to worry---I filed off a wee bit of metal from the tang on the reciever, and everything's just ducky now. 25 consecutive shots, and not a single misfire. Just a slight bruise from that delightfully comfy steel buttplate!
