What power would you recommend for shots out to 200 yards. What are some of the better low priced ones. Thanks.

bk,out to 200 you don't need a lot of magnification. A 2-7 or 4x is plenty. Especially around here,shots that far are rare. I have Leupolds but have used Bushnell,Nikon,Burris,and others. What are you scoping?

For shooting the kill zone on a deer,...even a 4x will do. For shooting groups,...I wouldn't go under 24x but would look for 32 or even 42x. Your purpose will determine the power you need.
why chase the game when the bullet can get em from here?....

JustC has it nailed. Depends upon what kind of shooting you are doing. For hunting a 4x will work fine though it is not the trendy 3x-9x and it will never be set a too high a magnification when you have a close shot. I do like the 3-9's for target shooting, and for bench resting, as Justin said, higher is better. I personally like the low power adjustables like 1.5x-6x, but I am not a bench shooter. Burris, Leupold and Nikon are my top picks in that order. If you want the most from your rifle, you won't get it with a $40 or $100 scope. Saving your nickles a little longer pays in the long run. I did a tone of research into scopes before I finally bought mine and I took into consideration cost, warrenty, and most of all performance. IMHO I think the best VALUE(for your money in other words) scope out there is the Bushnell Elite 4200 series scopes. They were originally Bausch&Lomb's premium scope. I have the 4-16x50mm AO and I absolutly love it. It simply blew away the Leupold and the Nikon of simular price. It easily compares with the luepold LPS 30mm tubed 3.5-14x52mm scope I have on my Weatherby. If I would have found the Elite before the LPS, the LPS would not have been bought. I will say I love the LPS though and will never get rid of it but at more than twice the cost of the Elite, it just isnt worth it.
For my .243 project I am looking into 2 scopes, the Elite in a 2.5-10x40mm ($399 in Cabelas) and the Zeiss Conquest 3.5-10x44mm ($549). I want the Zeiss because it is 2 oz. lighter @14oz. But it will depend on the money situation, I wont hesitate with the Elite. These would be great choices for your 200 yard or so shooting as well. I leave my other scopes on 6x while hunting and only turn them up if needed. That way I have good magnafication but not too much when close up shots are required. The key for me is remembering to turn them back down after a day at the range LOL.
If these scopes are out of your range then I highly recommend the Simmons Aetec 2.8-10x44mm ($179). My Brother has this on his 7mag and it has trully been impressive. We have never had to adjust it since the original sight in 6 years ago. The clarity is great as well. I will say though check it when you buy it. I have seen a few that were not as clear as his so check many before you buy. Also avoid buying them at Walmart, I was told the stuff at Walmart is like #2 grade stuff.0 -
I use an old Redfield Widefield straight 4 power on my Ruger Ranch Mini-14 for shooting coyotes and other small stuff out to 200-250 meters, and a Redfield Widefield 2-7 on my 7MM Weatherby Magnum to look farther out. These scopes, even bought used, still have a lifetime warranty which is honored by the new owner of the Redfield name - Blount, maybe?
I have a Simmons Presidential 3X9 on my .257 Weatherby, and a Burris Compact 3X9 on a custom Mauser .308. I guess I like obsolete scopes.
My favorites are the Widefields, because they sit so low on the action, and they are really nice optics - also, only about $75 to $100 at your friendly, local, gun show.0 -
If a variable power scope I'd go with a 2-7x or 3-9x, and leave it on 4x. That should be ideal. If a fixed power scope I would get a 3x or 4x, some might recommend a 6x but more than likely that will be too much. 0 -
You can get a good scope for $125-175 from several brands. This price range is adequate for most users. Each brand or model will have some plus or minus points and you should try to handle/look at some before you buy. A big factor as far as I'm concerned is the ease/difficulty of mounting on the rifle you've got. Some of the scopes have a short body that requires expensive extension rings to get proper eye relief. Another thing is the size of the eye piece. Will it clear the bolt handle at a height that you are comfortable with w/o losing the cheek contact with the stock.

I have a old Weaver scope. I was wondering if any of you would happen to know the model of it. I dont have any of the classic books or anything. Really a neat scope actually. It has three vertical and three horisontal crosshairs. They form a small box with a cross in the middle. It makes for a great windage and elevation compensator. I will never again use the scope as it is on my .264 that is now retired permantly. The scope should be an early sixties scope. I think it is a 3x9 or 2x8 I cant remember for sure and the gun is in a vault for storage. 0 -
TASCO OR BUSHNELL 3X9X40 WILL DO A GOOD JOB FOR MOST SHOOTERS AT DEER SIZED TARGETS.
I WOULD RATHER BE DUCK HUNTING.0
