Hold Over/Under

When I shoot at a steep uphill or downhill angle I know I need to hold over or under depending on shot. My question is which is which

I it dose not matter if the shot is up or down hill,your point of inpack will always be high. This is what my book and my hunting experince shows. Bullets seem to hit higher on uphill or downhill slopes because the net horizontal distance is actually shorter than that of the shot being taken.

I don't know the actually scientific facts on the matter but my Dad told me when I started hunting at age 12 to do the following on those types of shots.
Uphill - aim slightly higher on the front shoulder of a whitetail. Downhill- aim just where the white belly hair meets with the brown hair. I think it has something to do with gravity and the severity of the slope, but it has worked many times for me in the past.0 -
Myhandyman has it nailed. The distance on angled shots up or down is less than the distance on horizontal shots, so your hold should low. How much depends upon distance.

If you're shooting a medium caliber (30-30,308,7.62X39,243,270,etc.) rifle at a reasonable range (100-250yds); you shouldn't have to alter your aim whatsoever.
Assuming you zeroed at 200yds, uphill or downhill won't affect your trajectory as much as weather conditions at the muzzle. Gravity's effects are negligible due to the short flight time of the projectile.
If your 308 has a muzzle velocity of 2800fps; the time of flight at 200yds is only 1/4 second or so. If you hold over at 200 (even going uphill/downhill), you will hit as high as if you held over at the range.
The only time I could think of that you'd have to alter your sight picture would be if you'd zeroed at 100yds and weren't familiar with the trajectory of the bullets you're using, and you're shooting at something 300' above you and over 200yds away.

am i the only one that has heard this jingle....? 'aim up high shoot high, aim down low shoot low.' or was i just dreaming? i mean afterall....the band 'yes' sung about it in the 80's! 0
