According to The Blue Book of Gun Values, 23rd ed., p. 1652, 1964 ended with serial number 160307 and 1965 ended with 162699. Production started in 1955 and ended in 1973. Hope this helps.

Yes, but "pre-64" actually refers to mid 1964 when the Winchester plant was actually taken over.
A simple rule of thumb for your model 88. Is the checkering basket weave (coarse) with filagree? Or is it more finely cut? I actually have a 1964 Winchester catalog around somewhere. The earlier guns had the cut checkering.

Thanks. This has the cut checkering. Geri 0 -

What??? Winchester wasn't taken over in 1964... they just changed their manufacturing processes to reduce costs.
In 1931 Olin purchased the Winchester Repeating Arms Company and combined it with the Western Cartridge Company, then in 1981, U.S. Repeating Arms Company was formed and continues manufacturing Winchester brand rifles and shotguns in New Haven, Connecticut, under license from Olin Corporation.
