cracked reciever on a ruger 10-22
I bought a ruger 10-22 this week end for way to much $300.00 but it looks good. Bell and Carlson black stock ,aftermarket trigger set to 3 1/2 pounds and a cool bull barrel that has four very large flute cuts in it that makes the barrel look square.It also has a good mount and a cheap 24x4 tasco on it.I don't know who made the barrel all it has stamped on it is 22lr or who made the trigger it's gotta a weird mark on the out side of the group.I also don't know what the stocks worth. any info on the above would be of grate help.
My problem is the stainless steel reciever has a hair line crack just below the bottom rear of the ejection port.I did'nt see this till I removed the stock to clean and inspect the gun. I think it was probably caused by not properly securing the reciever in a vice when they put the heavy barrel on.I have heard of problems like that when AR-15s are inproperly secured in a vice.Does anyone know where or how much I can get a new reciever for ?Can this be fixed cheaper than replacement?

The first thing I would do is verify what you are seeing is a crack. I've seen many, many times that someone will think something is cracked, and it turns out to be a scratch, tool mark, forging line, or such. Do a visible dye or fluorescent penetrant inspection on it.

I don't know why you would want to secure the reciever in a vice to install the barrel. You slip the barrel in & secure it with the wedge & two bolts. Maybe they cracked it BY using a vice. 0 -
It is defanatly a crack it can be seen from both sides and felt.
I have never removed the barrel from a 10-22 I was just guessing from what I know of people busting and crushing recievers on AR-15 in vices.I don't see any other way to crack it there.

how big is the crack? If it's just a tiny crack I wouldn't even sweat it since it's not like a ruger 10/22 is going to be handling 65,000cup of pressure and any tremendous recoil energy.

I assume you bought the rifle at a gunshow. Did you buy it from a licensed dealer? Did you get a receipt showing serial number? Did you pay for it with a Visa or other credit card? Can you return the rifle and get a refund?
I used to deal at gunshows and I can see where a dealer could sell the gun in good faith not knowing it had a cracked receiver. Personally, I learned it was best to cheerfully refund money, even on used guns with troubles like that. Or if the customer wished, I would have the gun repaired at my expense. He would leave my table satisfied. Hopefully your dealer will do the same.

I'm having my Golden Retriever type this, so excuse please any errors.
If he won't refund/make it right and you're stuck with it; run down to checker or walgreens and get a package of J-B Weld, degrease the receiver completely, mix up the goo, and let it fill the crack.
It's kinda runny at first, so wear gloves and put down some newspapers (it's all they're good for anyway) so you don't get any on ya!
Build the repair up slowly on the outside/inside with successively wider patches over the repair over a week or so, then let it cure someplace warm for a few days, then go shootin'!

I took it out this morning and shot some cci green tags .WOW! this things realy shoots even with the crack .I shot 5 rounds under a dime at 25 yds off sand bags.I noticed I can see about 1/16 inch of play at the rear of the reciever if I push kinda hard.How ever I must either return the gun or get it properly fixed because I could'nt sleep knowing the crack was there.
I know the guy that sold me the gun would allow me to return it if I asked and I know he did'nt know it was cracked.I did'nt even see it until I removed the stock and I realy look a used gun over before I buy one.
Can this type of metal be welded mabe tiged or how much for a new reciever?

If you can get a refund, do so as the barrel will tend to wander as you are experiencing unless the seller is willing to discount the price to allow for receiver replacement. Some aftermarket barrels such as Volquartsen are made "oversize" by several thousands to the receiver hole for a tight fit and if improperly installed can crack the receiver. 0 -

There used to be some outstanding welders post on this forum. They helped me with some tough questions I had. You might want to repost under a welding title (such as Need advice on welding aluminum receiver) to see if you can get one of their attentions.
Personally, I am quiet sure it can be welded but I am no expert in that area.
I still think you ought to approach the dealer that sold you the gun. One of the uses of the profit in the gun business is to cover problems like what you have. Maybe he can and will work with you on it.

How come nobody suggested that he send the rifle back to Ruger? Ruger has excellent factory support and will probably fix it for free.
If they will not, I would consider buying a STEEL receiver from Brownell's.

nunn, did not suggest returning the receiver to factory because of all the aftermarket parts in the gun, ie barrel, trigger, etc. Once modified, most warranties are void. 0
