.223 WOLF BRAND AMMO
I see this stuff advertised in almost all of the mail-order catalogs for low prices,my question is this ammo OK to shoot in my AR-15 or should I stay away from it?

I shot about 40 rounds thru my AR-15 and decided I was not going to shoot it in a $700 rifle. It is dirty and foul smelling but it shoots fine. This was a personal decision on my part.
I do shoot the Wolf 7.6x39 in my AK-47 and it loves it. This gun is a $300 dollar gun and is not built to tight tolerances.
There are more knowledgeable people on here than me and they might can give you more insight on your question.

The cases are made of steel and are laquer coated. A friend of mine tired some of this stuff and found that it shot fine until the gun got warm and then had trouble with extraction of the spent cases. I highly suggest that you stick with brass cased ammo for the AR-15.

4wheeler is right. Wolf is dirty and it really smells, especially when your at an indoor range. If your like me and you like to go out on the weekends and fire off 200-300 rounds, and your AR15 will tolerate it, I say use it. I shoot it in my AK47 without any problems( of course it will shoot any kind of ammo you feed it ) and I have a Ruger Mini 14 & a Mini 30 that fire it without problems. I don't own an AR15, so I don't know if the action on them is tighter than the Mini's or not. You'll just have to try it and see. It's going to leave your gun dirty, that's for sure. But, the savings is worth it if you shoot a lot of rounds like I do. Accuracy wise, it's terrible. If you want to target shoot with it, you'll have to buy a good quality ammo. When you clean it you'll need a cleaner like Birchwood Casey Bore Scrubber to get the laquer build-up off. That's the main problem of using Wolf Ammo, heat builds up in the chamber and the laquer melts off of the casings and starts to build up. No problem with a loose gun, but with a tight action,it might jam after 50 rds.

I have heard and read all of the complaints regarding the Wolf ammunition when used in AR-15's. I ran across this short article when researching something else.

Russian ammo is usually steel cased meaning that the "brass" casing most Americans are used to is actually made of steel in many Russian ammunitions. To keep the case from sticking in the chamber after firing, the Russians developed a lacquer finish that assists in extraction. The down side to this solution is that the lacquer often builds up in the chamber area of most firearms - eventually causing problems with reliability.
The Silver Bear brand of 5.56 ammo is plated not in lacquer, but in Zinc. This allows the cases to be easily extracted but without the mess of lacquer.
Pick up 500 rounds and try it for yourself!

I see everyone tends to agree that Wolf is dirty and smells. I have shot a lot of it through my AR with no problems (other than a dirty smelly mess to clean), but when I ran out and then shot a few boxes of Winchester ammo...WOW. The gun was clean and my targets showed a remarkable difference! I will not shoot any more Wolf in it.
Now as far as 9MM I used to shoot a lot of Wolf in action pistol shooting. Still dirty and messy, but accuracy was OK. Pistols not too bad to clean. But then Wally world started selling Winchester in the 100 round value packs for $11...no more Wolf there either.0 -
If the AR (or upper half) you are shooting is Olympic Arms, the lifetime warranty will be void if you shoot non-USA made ammo through it. I doubt they would know the difference as long as the ammo was brass cased, but if the chamber was filled with Lacquer residue, you would be out of luck. My Beretta 9MM jammed using Wolf ammo, so ever since then I stopped using that brand. I'm sure it's fine for AK's, SKS's, & Mosin-Nagant's, but beyond that, I wouldn't recommend it. i have shot a few boxes of that in 45 auto cal. it shot fine but the lacquer coated metal shells are junk, cant reload them or at least i wont run them inmy dies. 0 -
Ran 2500rds of it through my AR before I got my 1st failure to eject. Let the AR cool down and had no further problems. It's good if you plan on shooting 500rds per session.
I won't shoot it in my pistols though. Too stinky indoors.

I like this stuff for plinking. But they do not group worth af flip, even in my Hbar. For plinking great, but for accuracy, go with a better brand. My HBar likes winchester. 0 -
First off I would like to thank everyone for their advise,you guys are the best.I think I'll pass on the big bad wolf and stick to the winchester that I've been using,like you say it shoots clean and is accurate and cleaning is easy.I would rather spend a little more money on better ammo and not have to worry about reliability and long cleaning sessions!

Theres a thread on this on AR15.com. I got some and it wouldn't work in my AR (sold it since then), but worked fine in my buddies AR. Some people don't have any problems with it, but lots do. Seems to depend on the rifle/ chamber. Best bet was South African surplus (brass case for @ .13/ round), but the supply has dried up. Supposed to be more coming in, but US customs is holding up all this ammo for security reasons (terrorism etc). Wolf has stopped putting the red sealant in its .223 rounds now, and are saying that it was this red sealant, NOT the laquer, that was causing the FTE's. The guy I sold my AR to said he was gonna try some of the new ammo and see if it might feed, if it doesn't, he's only out the 12-15 bucks a few boxes will cost him to try it. Sportsmans guide has Santa Barbara (spanish) .223 surplus at about .16/ round before shipping, but you can almost get winchester white box for that at wal mart. Keep looking around, there's always somebody running a special on ammo somewhere... 0 -
I don't claim to be an expert here but can relay my experience. My buddy built 3 ar's. We have shot several thousand rounds of wolf through those and a corbon 15 with no problems. Dirty yes but no feed/jam or eject problems. With mine--1/2 in groups at 100 yrds with wolf. Granted--built for target but not a single error.
Would I usae it in my hand guns for concealed carry--not a chance.0
