pistol range

I'm making a pistol range on my property...what is the best distance for it? I did the rifle range at 75 yards because of the place i put it and it seems to work fine but i want to put another (pistol) range in another area....any help please??

    25 yards should be ample for a pistol range....50 yards maximum.

    make your pistol range 50yds and extend your rifle range to 100 yds. this is the minimum distance for reduced target rifle events. this way you can practice bigger events on smaller targets legally. i know this is your private range, but if you invite others, they will be glad to see at least 100 yds. heck...rent your property out to clubs! enjoy your range! you lucky guy! i can only have a 5 yd indoor basement test range where i live!

    When I had an addition put on my country home, I had the use of a bulldozer and a backhoe.

    I built a 30yd. pistol range complete with side wall enbankments for noise control and safety issues. I poured cement pads at the 25 & 15 yd. lines for fixed shooting positions, as well as target stand holders. I then filled the area with fine pea-sized gravel (it helps find the spent cases and no mowing the grass during the summer).

    I bought several metal plate type targets, which I shoot at the most.

    I let my friends use the range only when I'm home (just don't tell your homeowner's insurance company !).

    I've been thinking about putting a range in my basement. I can get 20yrds down there. What makes a good backstop. I wan't to be able to shoot at least .357mag.

    I've seen several home-made backstops made of angled plate steel (1") with a sand trap catch.

    Also, two & three layers of heavy rail-road ties against a block wall.

    a big huge block of moulders clay or a genuine bullet trap. ive known some to use plywood sheets. i like a real bullet trap myself.

    American Shooter had a product on the show that was for use with indoor ranges. They looked like big black blocks and were made of rubber and teflon. I checked their listings and I didn't find it. Perhaps you can drop them an e-mail and ask.

    I have a bobcat loader so i have piled clay in a semi circle for the pistol range and have spinning targets also...They are kinda fun to shoot at. Good idea on the pea gravel .... Thanks

    The local gunclub I use has a 50yd pistol/rimfire rifle range. The pistol side has cement slabs with post holes for target stands at 3, 7, and 15yards. Then one at 25 and one 50yds. I rarely ever practice past 15yds. The local IDPA and IPSC clubs never have targets beyond that range. From the statistics I've read and heard several times, most shootings are within point blank range, with less at 3 yards. Then less than the ones at 3, at 7yards. Then less that the ones at 7, at 15 yards. And so on and so on.
