I have a friend whose Father had a Cold 38 special.

She showed it to me and the markings are as follows:

    Patent 1884, 1900, 1905

    Colt Army

    38 special

    PTFA1MFG

It is double action but that is all I can find on the gun.

It is in pretty good shape.

Any help as to what it really is and a ballpark value?

    Thanks

Check under "Aircrewman" and I think you will get a hit.

My reference says that Colt made 1,189, of the Model M13 "Aircrewman" revolvers for the U S Air Force between 1951 and 1956.
Yours fall into the correct s. n. range. Does it have any additional markings such as "A. F. NO. XXX" ?
