45 acp
Another dumb question.
When boar hunting is a 45acp of any value as a backup. If I cannot find commercial ammo that is adaquate, I am thinking of trading a for either a 357 or 44 mag revolver.
Even the 357 is a little on the light side?

Back up on a Boar hunt, means the boar is eating either your or your friend's leg, and range will be short. Winchester silvertips or Remington Saber Points in 230 grain will work. You need penetration, so really even a 230 FMJ will work fine, their skulls are pretty thick, and you need to get in their to the brain mass. Just unload the pistol in it's face, and you'll do fine!![:D]

Thanks for your advice which leads me to believe that, while boars are real tough, they have fairly thin skin and the 45, loaded with a penetration bullet should work at close range.

The .45 will work just fine. I have used it as a backup for deer and I use silvertip or FMJ 230 gr.

mvbrown, I would guess that the .45 is absolutely adequate. I have shot several hogs stone-dead with a single shot .22 lr to the forehead at fairly close range from Ruger revolver.

I agree, the .45 ACP should be plenty adequate as a short range backup while boar hunting.

What size boar? The big russians? I prefer to carry a 44 mag revolver in either single or double action because they can be fired with one hand even after a misfire. If you are carrying it for insurance, you want it as foolproof as possible. 0 -
The .45 will definitely do the job,but you should check your local hunting regulations on the use of FMJ bullets as most states do not allow them for hunting.Just a little HEADS-UP that might save you from a firearms violation.
IT'S BETTER TO BE JUDGED BY 12, THAN CARRIED BY 6!0 -
