M-1 barrel installation

The barrel on mine is rotten. Is the replacement operation a delicate task for a "specialist" or can a general gunsmith handle the task?

Know one with a good reputation in Southern Mid-Michigan?

    Not sure if you mean M1 Garand or M1 carbine. The carbine can be done by just about anyone with the action wrench and barrel block.

    The Garand needs to be headspaced (it's a little more critical on the Garand than the carbine) by someone knowledgeable. It should be within the range of a general gunsmith.

    if you dont know anything about headpace and all the other good stuff take to a gunsmith[8D]

    Forgot to mention, If Garand, and the barrel is a WWII date, you may be better off NOT changing it out. CHECK!!!!!

    The fact it's "rotten" tells me CORROSIVE AMMO. Only the Garand shot corrosive ammo DURING WWII!

    Yes it did, but those barrels are fairly easy to get! As you may know, A WWII Garand with original barrel is a nice little bauble to have.

    IT TAKES A SPECIAL RECEIVER FIXTURE AND A GUAGE TO GET THE SIGHTS T.D.C. THEN YOU HAVE TO HEADSPACE. BEST LEFT TO A GOOD GUNSMITH.

    If using a short chambered, aftermarket barrel, it is not a big deal if you are familiar with rebarreling and chambring,have the proper action wrench, a barrel vise, and a pull through reamer to headspace the gun. Surplus barrels will have a "finished" chamber that would require fitting by trying different bolts which makes an iffy proposition for the novice.

    Yeah it's a Garand. It's a 6-45 so kinda WWII, kinda not. I've got a excellent condition 6-45 barrel to swap out.

    I guess worn out barrel would be a more accurte description. The rifling is worn down pretty good but still shootable, I don't know what the throat erosion is but it will swallow a whole bullet. The main problem is the gas lug threads, almost not there, the keyways for the piston are real wide, they were peened already. The whole gas system would fly off when I fired it....(not happy about the purchase at the time at all)

    anyhow...I stippled the keyway some to add some friction and gave it some green locktite, the slip fit kind. This worked for about fifty rounds when she got hot and the locktite broke free.

    Really really didn't nor don't want to seperate the two original parts, but I also don't want a $500 wall hanger. So I was at a crossroads for about a year now. Then I stumbled across this barrel and have decided that since it was made the same month, it would not be to calouse of a thing to do.

    I know about headspace but.. proper tools and knowledge of tourque. rather have a pro do it. But at the same time I don't what a smoo crankin' on my sweetie.
