5.45x39?
Has anyone heard anything good or bad about this round?

I have a colt AR upper that was special ordered in it and I like it with the one exception that there are no brass cased rounds on the market. The upper I have was built to shoot the Wolf brand and it does fine but the only options are HP or FMJ in bullits. I am looking for some soft point ammo to hunt with in it. Are you looking at the AK 74 or some other type chambered for the 5.45x39? If you want to reload it in brass the virgin cases run $60 per 20 and the dies are $135 a set. those high prices and the limited type of bullits manufactured are the only draw backs I can find to the round! Jus my opinion but if I do find some soft point I will use it to hunt with on a limited bases.

I seen them at AIM's the AK-74 then looked at the bullets and that got me to thinking could I recamber a 22 hornet to 5.45x39? These could prove to be a good little varmint round. The only resson I would reload is if I could recamber the hornet to the 5.45x39 for better accuracy. So can anyone tell me if it will work? Or recamber a 221 fireball to 5.45x39. Which one would work. 0 -
JJ, ive heard some news that the soft point ammo from wolf is unreliable. Ive heard that it doesnt expand very well at all.

The bullet diameter of the 5.45 x 39 is .221, the diameter of the Hornet is .224 ( current/modern ). The 5.45 x 39 projectile is going to be .003 less then groove diameter if your going to be using the east block ammo. Goes without saying, that this is likely to give you accuracy problems. Might work if you can reload it with the correct diameter bullets. Same problem with the Fireball. 0 -

No offense meant buckdeer, but there is a .050 difference between the rim/base diameters of the 2 Soviet rounds. 0 -
The 5.56 US round is much better in every catagory. I would chose a SAR 3 over the SAR 2 any day. Now if you just want to collect and shooting is a secondary concern go for the SAR2. My 2 cents.

I don't know about soft points in the AR15. Maybe soft points in the fatter Russian round will feed better but they jam and bugger up in my 6mmx45 on an AR upper. 0
