ultralight .243 win--need suggestions
I currently have a Remington Model 700 BDL in .243 win.. The gun is ultimatly my daughters but it will be many years till she uses it and I dont ever know if that will even happen. She is all girl and her mother shelters her something fierce and being divorced I dont have much say. Well I am thinking of converting the gun in a manor that if she was to ever want the gun to use I could return it to the way it is now. It has a beautiful wood stock that is in perfect shape that I plan to save for her. sorry rambling there......
This is what I would like to do:
I should add, this will be a hunting rifle, not target!! Being as light as possible being the key. I have a Sako TRG-S in the 7mm-STW for my big rifle, this will be my light weight, hiking, rifle for deer and Antelope and maybe a Elk (yes I said Elk!!)rifle in case of emergency.
1. Replace the stock with a thumbhole sythetic stock. Any suggestions on a good stock? I have tried to find the McMillen web sight and been unable to.
2. Maybe replace the barrel. Is there other claibers that would work with this action that would be more powerful that I could change it to by changing the barrel(WSM??)? I am thinking a Douglas or another good barrel in a 24" maybe even 26" (for accuracy) length that is a fluted stainless hunting barrel. Any suggestions on this?
After this is done then I will top it with a good quality scope. Something like a Zeiss(affordable series) scope or even the ever impressive Bushnell (still Bausch&Lomb in my eyes) Elite 4200 series in a 2.5-10 40-44mm non AO scope.
I think this would be a very nice all around gun and any information on who to contact or suggestions on products would be greatly appreciated!!

First, is it hers or yours? If hers, you should ask her permission. Otherwise I will mention only that I find thumbhole stocks very awkward for woods carry. Your hand is forced into a position that is not comfortable for carry and the wrist is too think for ease of carry in another position. Just a thought.

The gun is actually mine, I was saving it for her to use someday but now with the divorce like I said I dont know if that will ever happen and there is no need for the gun to just sit and not be used. Thats why I was thinking I could convert the gun back if need be and if not then I have a great gun. 0 -
Ohhh I thought I should add that she is only 3 so she could care less if I change it or not LOL. She doesnt even know about the gun. True it could be a cherished thing for her but I highly doubt it since her Mom wont even allow a gun in the home.
I have heard that about the thumbhole stocks and I agree but I love the steardiness I get with one on offhand shots. I love my .22 Rguer 10/22 with the thumbhole for that reason so I am used to using the thumbhole and i use the Mountain Stalker sling in the forward carry position and the thumbhole is excelent in that postition, fast and precise.0 -

I own several thumbhole stocks and use them for hunting, varmint shooting and bench work. I have never experienced any trouble holding, carrying or shooting them.

Thanks so much for your help. That shooting times link is awesome, it has just about every link you can imagine on that thing!! I have been doing tons of searching and stuff from it. I wrote a letter to christianson arms too see what they had to suggest on both my STW and the .243. I will let you guys know what they say. 0 -
It sounds to me like you want to take over "her" rifle and make it yours. Which is fine. Take it over, change it all up and make whatever you want. But don't use her as the excuse.
If you want a rifle that can truly be hers, then check out the Ruger M77 compacts in .243. Everything about them is well suited for smaller statured people. I thin it would fit the bill exactly for what you are looking for.

Eb, your right to a point. It's not so much that i want to take over her gun. The gun is nothing that special, I bought it before she was born or even conceived and I thought that I would save it for her. I actually bought the gun to try and teach my now x wife how to shoot and get her interested in shooting as i knew my STw or others would scare her. I still might save it for her!! I am just weighing the options. I just dont want to see the gun go to waste. If after doing all that I would like to it, I might be close to just buying a rifle from Christiansen or another builder in cost. Basically the only thing I would be using is the action. If this ends up the case I will leave the gun oiled and in storage and see what happens, If it is significantly less then I might go ahead with the project. If I do, I will buy her a gun of her choice when she is ready for one. In the mean time she can learn on this one. I Spoil her rotten and it will continue, and if she ends up wanting this gun and another gun along with it, she will get it, period!! LOL
I can see what you guys are thinking and it isnt really like that. Mean old dad taking his daughters gun. Its not like that at all. I am just rethinking the path I will take with her. My dad gave me the .257 weatherby I have and My grandfather left me my .264 ( a Wichester custom{factory} stainless Alskan Model 70, made in 62, 1 of 4 made) both the gun's mean the world to me so trust me I understand the meaning of it.0
