Alleno,,,, You have both. The model 17 was also called the K-22 Marsterpiece.
Your gun was made in 1955, and your right, the K# on the grip is the serial number.
I have some of these "Masterpieces" in .22 and .38 cal and like you said, they are fine shooters.
If you watch the old Adam-12 series, Malloy and Reed carried K-38's as their duty guns. That was what LAPD issued back in those days.

Sounds like you have an earlier K22. In The late 50's Smith began stamping the model number on the frame under the crane in the same spot as your 811xx [assembly number]is now.The serial number will be the one on the bottom of the grip frame. The Model 17 is a K22, just so designated as per the model stamp.Hopefully someone can fill in the exact details-Bob

    Sorry Lefty-Your post wasn't there when I sent mine[dang dial-up]

Gun control is a steady hand

In 1957, Smith & Wesson began assigning model numbers to its named models. The K22 Masterpiece was assigned the model numbr of 17.

I also have an original in the blue box. Box says both Mod 17..K-22
S&W's finer works in my opinion. It is a .22 on a .38 frame, to give the same feel as shooting the .38. You made a very good purchase and the gun is worth at least double what you paid.

ATF: Not quite so. The Model 18 is essentially a Model 15, but in .22. It has the RAMP front sight of the M-15, not the PATRIDGE sight of the M-17.
