870 shotgun scope with mount

I'm looking to mount a scope on my 870 for deer hunting. Would a Weaver base that needed to be drilled & tapped, with a decent(Tasco) 1.5-5x32/44 with 1" aluminum rings be the way to go? Any other ideas? I'd don't want to use a saddle mount. Thanks.

    Weaver makes a no drill mount, with a side plate that mounts on the side of the reciever. The plate has grooves and the rings are mounted on a seperate section that fastens to the grooves in the side plate and comes up over the top of the reciever.

    I use this system on my 870 and am able to easily remove the scope for bird hunting and replace it for slugs without having to readjust the scope each time for zero.

    ALTHOUGH A BIT PRICEY YOU MIGHT CONSIDER A NEW BARREL WITH CANTILEVER SCOPE MOUNT ATTACHED TO FULLY RIFLED BARREL .THESE BABY'S ARE PRODUCING SOME IMPRESSIVE GROUPS WITH SABOT'S . I'M ASSUMING YOU WILL BE USING SLUGS FOR DEER . MOUNTIING ON RECIEVER DOES REQUIRE DRILLING & TAPPING THIS CAN BE EXPENSIVE AND THE HOLES WILL HURT THE RESALE VALUE OF YOUR GUN.SCOPE ON RECIEVER RATHER THAN BARREL WILL NOT PRODUCE GREAT GROUPS IF YOU HAVE THE SLIGHTEST BIT OF SLACK IN FIT TO RECIEVER.EITHER WAY YOUR GOING HUNTING,YOU CAN'T LOOSE.     I put an aimtech mount on my 870 and it works really well I'm sure its just like the weaver one that doesn't require any drilling or tapping. B-Square makes one to.

    Thinman, you said it all. If you can afford a barrel with a cantilever scope mount, buy it. Believe it or not, there is quite a bit of play between the barrel and the receiver of a pump or auto-loader shotgun. With a cantilever barrel, no matter how many times you take the barrel off to clean your gun, the barrel and the scope mount on it will always be in direct alignment with each other. It may sound like I'm getting awfully technical over a little bit of movement, but if you take it times the distance of say a 125-150 yd. shot, it can make the difference between hitting your target in the kill zone or wounding it and have it take a nice long run to the point that you can't find it, or a totally missed shot. It's not un-heard of for some hunters with a rifled cantilver barrel and scope on there shotguns and using sabot slugs to shoot a deer up to 175 yds. and be dead on. Especially if they have there guns sighted in for long distances and have a range finder or bullet drop feature on there scopes. I have a Mossberg 695 bolt action 12 ga. with a 22" rifled barrel. The receiver and the barrel are all on piece and the receiver is tapped for a scope mount, so in affect, it works much like the cantilever barrel scope mount, they are always in alignment. This gun is a real tack driver! They don't get much more accurate than this!

    Thanks for all of the info. I don't plan on selling the shotgun, so drilling and tapping with a Weaver mount maybe the way to go. Would a 1.5X4(LEUPOLD) scope be the proper way to go? I really don't think I need more range than that. Thanks again for your input.
