Calling all Glock experts

Well the time has come for me to purchase my first glock...went through all of my stacks of gun magazines that I have accumulated over the years researching what suits my needs and have decided on a Glock model 17...I guess my question is...what kind should I get...should I get just a stock m17 or supe it up a bit? I know it comes with several different site setups oe and aftermarket...what are the best sites for the Glock? Also, I've noticed ported barrels and slides...are these nessesary? I do plan on getting the high cap pre ban drop free mags for it (I live in a free state)...any advice from the Glock experts would be greatly appreciated!!!

    Larzman,, Iam a Glock armorer, and own a bunch of them.
    What you want to do with the gun will have a lot to do with what features you should get.

    Four of my Glocks are model 17's. I use them for competition, but use a .45 cal at work. My competition guns are all stock 17's with the factory white sights. They work fine for that purpose.

    Compensated models are nice, but if you want to use it in competition you will be in a different class that the stock guns in most matches.

    There are a lot of "custom" items you can get for the Glock, such as extended slide release, which Glock actually calls a slide stop lever.

    Extended mag release, adjustable sights, comped barrels and slides, lighter pull triggers at 3.5 lbs are some of the extras available.

    If you want a gun for protection, I would stick with a stock model 17 with the 5lb trigger. Just my suggestions.

    You could have it both ways.If you buy the comp model you could also get a standard barrel to reduce flash at night or buy the threaded barrel which gives you an extra 1/2''of barrel length. The factory rear target sight will give you an extra 1/2''sight radius over the fixed sight.

    If you're setting this up for personal defense, I would suggest maybe adding Trijicon nite sights and skip the ported barrel. And practice a lot. I have a G22 and that's all I've ever done to it. Laredo is right, there are a lot of add-ons for Glocks depending on what you're going to do with it, but the 17 should be a good shooter right out of the box.[:)]

    Thanks for the input...I will be carrying it primarily for self defense...can I get one with the nite sites already installed?

    Thats a large pistol primarily for self defense. Have you considered the G19 with Tritium night sights? A +2 mag would give it the same capacity.

    The Glock 17 can be purchased with night sights already installed by the factory.

    I have a Glock 19 with factory installed Night sights and I put an extented slide release on it also. Very nice compact and concealable package.

    Yes, it's pretty big to carry for personal protection but I'm a pretty big dude...I have really big hands and don't think that one of the compacts or subcompact Glocks would even fit in my hand with a finger extention...I figure a G17 with a nice Dillon leather holster will suit my concealment needs fine.     Hey just another vote for the Glock 17C with night sites. Had mine for years and no problems. I did go with the 3.5 lb trigger.

    I have a model 27 with extended mag ...40 cal...been a great gun... adj white sights...i took the night sights off because they couldnt be seen well in daylight...Ive carried it for 3 years with no problems

    Not fond of compensated guns for street use, but I like the 3.5 trigger and night sights are a matter of taste, I like the 24/7 Xpress sights for that sort of thing. Try renting a stock model to see what you think you might do to it. Glocks are pretty good just the way they are.

    The glock is one of the few guns that I wouldn't do anything to. I mean other than maybe install a match barrel (and I mean professionally install and fit) there's really not much that will really change the performance. Some people like night sights, I personally think they are a waste of money and highly prefer a fiber tube sight over them. As far as a trigger, I've seen more than a few people mess stuff up by trying tweak the gun out. And I've yet to feel a smooth 3.5lb aftermarket trigger. I prefer the factory trigger, especially in a carry gun where your life may depend, you don't want any chance of a failing aftermarket part. An those titanium triggers, my only words would be "Don't fix it if it aint broke."
