WHAT THE HECK......

Ok, I don't get it! I'm new to the aspect of shooting for accuracy but not new to firearms. All my life I have read and heard that a clean barrel makes for good accuracy. I've always practiced this belief. Now I'm not so sure. Today I was trying some new factory ammo in my Hornet and shot a few groups of three. The groups were pretty good, 1/2" @50yrds. Then I ran my bore snake through the barrel one time. Guess what I was shooting...2-3" groups until I had fired about 15 more rounds then the groups started going back where they were. SOOOOO, what do I do...put the gun away dirty everytime so that I have a fouled barrel for that first shot at a coyote? Eventually I will have to clean it but what about the first shot the next time? Any help would be appreciated.

  Hmm. I have heard that in some guns, slightly dirty barrels fire best. It sometimes takes a few shots for the gun to "settle in". Your mileage may vary.

  my 11/87 is like that. If i clean it it will not shoot as good as when it is dirty. that reminds me I need to shoot it a bit before hunting season starts

  I hate to tell you, but I don't think running a bore snake thru your gun exactly cleans it. Not properly anyway. It may push some gunk out of the way, but is not suitable for removing copper and lead. Not without a whole lot of elbow work anyway. Its better to just use a plain old cleaning rod with brushes, patches, mops, and jags.
  
  There is honesly alot of other factors that could have caused your decrease in accuracy. You honestly can't really measure true accuracy until you remove the firearms most inaccurate fault, the shooter. You need to bench rest your gun, preferably in a shooting vise, where you body does not support the rifle one bit. And you can make a homeade trigger remote out of an old serringe, and some sergical tubing, and a small hydrolic clamp type device. Forgive my spelling, I'm typeing fast and not looking back for errors.
