Mauser Action 98 or 91?
How do you tell the diffrence in a 98 or 91 action? I know a 98 and Ruger look the same, but does a 91 look like a 98? How hard is it to unscrew the barrel.I have a barrel vise but no action wrench.I havent started twisting on it yet,so I assume it has right hand threads.Any advice is welcome. Thanks.

The 91 has a external box magazine in front of the trigger guard.
Internal box magazines weren't adopted until 1893, starting with the Spanish contract.0 -
The 98 cocks on opening (when you lift the bolt handle) the 91 cocks on closing (when you push the bolt forward and down). The 98 has a flush floorplate, the 91 hangs down as it single stacks. Threads are right hand. The 98 will have a 3 lug bolt, the 91 a two lug. You must use the proper action wrench when breaking down the rifle or chance twisting the receiver making it a paperweight. How hard is it to remove, depends on the individual rifle, some you can break with only the wrench, others you need a cheater pipe on the wrench to move them. 0 -
The 98 has a big shield covering the rear of the bolt, The 91 does not.
