Shotgun barrel Q&A's?
I just bought a used barrel for a Mossberg 500. It is a 20-24" Barrel, C-Lect Choke and says it is a 2 3/4" Chamber.
I looked down the chamber and it looks like it will take a larger shell....yep a 3" Mag fell right in. Shoved a pen down the chamber to get a depth of the chamber and it measured out to 3.5" Deep.
Now somebody says the chamber is bored out more because when the shell is fired the room is needed for the plastic casing to open, thus firing the 3" Magnum was not reccomended.
Do you think it's safe to fire a larger shell in the barrel?
When I was sanding the barrel for re-bluing it had a twist to the exterior of the barrel, not on the inside. It is a very heavy guage pipe and not like the new sheet metal barrel that just came on my new Maverick 88.

if it only says "chambered for 2 3/4 " please, please, please only fire that, that person was right about why it is bored bigger to allow the plastic to open for the shot to come out or you would end up with a blocked barrel and a nicely exploded shotgun.only go with whats on the barrel for your own safety.[;)], if it says chambered for 2 3/4", 3", 3 1/2", then its fine , but never fire whats not stamped on the barrel.you might end up [xx(], that wouldnt be cool.

measure a spent 2 3/4" hull and tell me what you get. the area in question is called the forcing cone. someone may have had it bored out which is called lengthening the forcing cone. its done to cut down on recoil. as our other poster says, dont shoot anything other than a 2 3/4 if its so marked. 0 -

The twist pattern to the outside of the barrel sounds like the pattern left by the hammer forging process. 0 -
MEASURE A FIRED 23/4" AND ABOUT 3 " IS WHAT YOU WILL GET.CHAMBER IS LONGER BECAUSE FIRED CASE IS LONGER. BOBSKI IS ON THE MONEY . 20 GA
GUNS ARE FOR SMALL GAME IN MY OPINION AND IF YOU NEED A 3" 20 TO DO THE JOB MAYBE YOU SHOULD GRAB YOUR 12 GA. INSTEAD.
