S&W 4" Mod 15
Hello. I would appreciate a little help with a potential buy. I have an opportunity and an urge to buy a used S&W Mod 15 from a private individual. It has a 4" barrel, a set of crappy plastic "stag horn" stocks (both sides cracked) and a finish that I am wondering about. I thought it was stainless until I got home and looked at the "blue book". I now believe it to be plated, I guess nickel but about as dull as stainless. There are no comparables on the GB or other board now - only blue guns - and I'm wondering about a fair offering price. It has some rub wear on the muzzle, from tip to about 1/4" back on port side. Otherwise, clean and tight. Were both nickel and stainless finishes available for this one? Thanks. Best, Jim

If its a 15 it should be blue only/ I do not recall nickel being an option unless it was a special order. If it is nickel and not peeling use flitz polish and it will clean it up pretty well. The 15 was never made in stainless the model 67 was the stainless version of the 15. These guns were also called the combat masterpiece. PS value in good tight shape would be about $175.00 tops

Actually, there were 20 model 15's made in stainless as experimental, so if you have one it is worth lots of money. The whereabouts of these guns is unknown.
The regular production guns were made in both blue and nickle,as mentioned above.0 -
Several years ago it was popular to take a gun with a terrible finish, such as a police trade-in, and have it Nitex refinished. Nitex looked like dull stainless or nickel and covered up lots of problems.
Model 15's are one of the best guns Smith made but they had one of the poorest resell values. This is because there were so many produced plus most folks preferred the popular 357 magnum caliber.
john w says $175 is tops. I agree. And it would have to be in near perfect condition to command that price.

Thank you all. It will take $6.00-$8.00 bucks for S&W factory grips to make the thing look okay. I can live with the small plating loss at the muzzle for it is a solid shooter otherwise. I'll see if a $100.00 will get it tomorrow and if so I think I will have made a good trade. Best, Jim

I was looking at a Model 15 the other day. Seemed nice but they were asking the same money as a Model 19 that looked much better overall. Getting more potential power for the same money seems to depress the appeal of 38 SPL guns.

Saxon, Nice picture and a nice piece. You've got that photo posting thing down like a pro. That looks like the revolver over here, but your finish appears to be much better. In addition to the non-plated pieces: trigger, hammer, and rear sight, is your "ejector ring" on the cylinder blued or blacked as well? I think I am going to make my deal at lunch today. I know you'll know this: Is this a K-frame for purpose of replacing the grips? Thanks. Jim

Beautiful photo! In view of the grips, I'd bet Gen. Geo. Patton didn't own this one![;)] Seriously, though, the Mod. 15 is just about the ideal .38 Spec. revolver. Has the the adjustable sights that the Mod. 10 lacked, and a slightly improved balance. And those "K" frames tune up so smoooooth! 0 -
Doug, Thanks. Yes and I had a pair of S&W square butt walnut stocks here that I was thinking were from a K (a 64 or 66). They are the smaller type - not target/speedloader big stocks - and they do just fine. I bought the gun Monday for $100 and while its no huge bargain at that I've seen a lot more asked for less gun at the shows around here so I'm pretty sure it was a decent trade. The seller was tickled with the $100 bill as well. There is some plating loss at the muzzle but it shoots fine mechanically. Don't really know how accurate but I did shoot it into a ditch bank behind the parking lot. I think it'll be a good shooter for the folks here once we tamper with the adjustable sights.
