Colt MT6400C Match Target M4

I've been looking at borrowing a friend's AR-15.
Haven't done any rifle shooting in ages, and don't know a whole lot.
What's the Compensator do?
Is there anything good or bad I may want to know about this rifle?

    I am an authorized Colt law eforecement dealer and quite frankly I'd advise you to pass over this model. I have three of these M4 carbine restricted sales samples and they are nice to shoot but the civilian version (which your link shows in the photo) serves no useful purpose. The compensator really does very little but allows there to be SOMETHING on the end of the barrel since the standard flash hidder is banned by the Crime Bill. The short 16" stepped down barrel is designed for using the M203 grenade launcher and unless you own one of these launchers you won't find much use for this special barrel. You will suffer a drop off in velocity and muzzel enrgy over the standard length barrel as well as a loss of accuray beyond 300 meters. Most people actually dislike the oversized M4 handgaurds which were intended to provide extra protection to the hand during full auto fire and you probably won't shoot enough in semi auto to justify the extra size of the handgaurds. The butt stock on your M4 civilain version is pinned in the extended position and offers the WORST of both worlds: The uncomfortable and awkward CAR type stock without the ability to retract or adjust the length of pull if you are wearing gear. Once again there is nothing here except a certain "look". I like Colts and make a good living selling them to cops but I'd advise you to simply purchase a standard Match Target rifle with a conventional fixed butt stock. The longer 20" barrel improves accuracy, offers better sighting and the standard butt stock is much more comfortable to use on a daily basis. These are my own opinions and otehrs may feel differently and prefer to go for the looks rather than useful features.

    Thanks, Mark. I wanted to take pictures so it could go to auction, and shoot it while I have it as well. I rarely get to target shoot even at 100 yards, but I thought something billed as a "Match Grade" rofle might be fun to shoot. At any rate, I'm not buying. When I do consider the purchase of a rifle, I'll certainly look into the standard Match Target rifle. I'VE JUST LOOKED AT THEM and they look much more comfortable. Another way to start is an AK-47. I see nice ones for as little as two hundred dollars.

    By my understanding of the laws, this firearm CAN be shipped into CA for me to borrow for a short time (under thirty days) while I shoot it and shoot (pictures) it.

    Is this the case?

    I just finished with another member who told me that I did not know what I was talking about most of the time (see "Shipping a firearm to the UK") but if you trust me not to mislead you I'll attempt to fill you in on the details here. Unless you are a fully licensed FFL dealer hre in CA there is really no way to bring in a "banned" assault weapon from out of state for any purpose. There is however a very narrow exception for match target shooters who are competing in sactioned events in this state, but this is pretty much limited to the high power matches held at Coalinga. The DOJ will allow such shooters to bring their rifles into the state for the duration of the match plus a little travel time, but full documentaion from the shooter and the match officials is needed before such a limited use import will be approved.

    Dealers like myself can bring "banned" firearms into the state for limited periods of time for law enforcement demos, gun shows, and so called trade shows (which are never held in this state anymore). Only FFL dealers are allowed to receive shippments of non curio and relic firearms in this state. If such an assault rifle were to be shipped you would have to go through an FFL who would not be allowed to transfer the rifle to you...not even for 30 seconds! I am afraid that this is a dead end in California and you'll have to travel to your frinds location to shoot his AR.
