breaking in a new barrel
Can anyone please tell me what "breaking in a barrel" is? I have been shooting for 30 years and have never done this to any gun I have bought. I guess I want to know what it means, how it is done and what it will do for me and my shooting. I have a 300 win mag mauser custom that will be back from being blued any day and I know this has come up before but I need to know how to break in a new barrel the right way. I have heard you fire 1 round clean then fire 2 or 3 then clean then go to 5 or 6 then clean ect until you have fired a box through. It has already been test fired after the barrel was installed 2 times any help would be nice.

There are perhaps ways off breaking in a barrel. I suggest just
firing some rounds off. Many will disagree-ask juju. 1010 -
I fire 1 and clean for about the first 10-15
then fire 3 and clean for about another 20-30
then fire 5 and clean for about another 20-30
by then should notice the fouling becoming far less on the patches. Once you can fire say 20 rnds with only 1 patch showing copper,...that is when she is nicely broken in. The quality of the barrel and the lapping job will determine how long the break-in period is. As long as it is still showing copper on a patch after only 1 round fired,..you need to keep shooting 1 round and cleaning. That first part is the important part. Clean up the burrs and smooth the surface,..and she will stay accurate longer between cleanings.

And say we're over the cryo argument itself would you cryo before or after break in?

I had my last barrel blank cryoed before it was ever sent to the gunsmith,..it's cheaper that way. PacNor did it for me.

Ernie Stahlman of Badger Barrels recommends that with smokeless
powder, for the first 10 shots using jacketed bullets, to use copper
cleaner to remove the copper fouling from the bore.
After shot 6 or 7, you'll note you can't see any more copper residue, but
keep cleaning after each shot until all 10 shots are fired.
For the next 10 shots, clean after every 2 shots until all 10 have been fired.
This is nothing but insurance that the burnishing process has been completed. In fact, what you have accomplished is closing the pores of the barrel metal which have been opened and exposed by the cutting and lapping procedures.

Has anyone heard of, or used a technique called "firelapping" for breaking-in a new barrel. I read something about it a few years ago. It involves coating bullets with an abrasive of some sort, and then shooting the bullet out the new barrel. Does anyone know any detail about this? 0
